March Madness 2018: Complete Sweet 16 Schedule, Updated Bracket and More

Joe TanseyMar 21, 2018

While not all of the eight matchups in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA men's basketball tournament stick out to the casual fan, all of them present intriguing individual showdowns.

On paper, it may seem like top teams like No. 1 Villanova and No. 4 Gonzaga have an easier path to the Elite 8 than others, but that's not the case when you break down their respective matchups.

You also have to take into account the extra doses of chaos we witnessed in the first weekend of the Big Dance, when not even the No. 1 overall seed Virginia was immune to an upset.

Although the volume of games is lighter with 16 teams left in the tournament, Thursday and Friday's Sweet 16 contests should come close to the same levels of excitement the first and second round provided.

Intriguing Guard Battle Headlines Clash Between Villanova and West Virginia

There are few programs in the nation that are immune to West Virginia's press.

Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, No. 1 Villanova is one of those teams, as the Wildcats possess a stable of talented guards able to deal with whatever pressure is thrown at them.

Although some will link West Virginia's success directly to the press, Bob Huggins' team can hang with the top seed in the East region even if the press doesn't work because of its experienced guards.

Jevon Carter and Daxter Miles Jr. pose an interesting matchup for Jalen Brunson and Co., as they are as good a scoring duo as any in the nation.

SAN DIEGO, CA - MARCH 18: Daxter Miles Jr. #4 of the West Virginia Mountaineers drives against Jon Elmore #33 of the Marshall Thundering Herd in the first half during the second round of the 2018 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Viejas Arena on March 1

In the second-round win over No. 13 Marshall, Carter led the Mountaineers with 28 points, while Miles added nine points and three other players found their way into double digits.

West Virginia needs the same variety in scoring on Friday in order to keep pace with Villanova, who had three guards score over 12 points in the second-round triumph over No. 9 Alabama, in which the Wildcats limited Collin Sexton to 17 points.

Even if the Mountaineers hone in on defending Brunson and Mikal Bridges, the Wildcats still have Donte DiVincenzo and Phil Booth ready to pounce on the offensive end of the hardwood.

Of course, any team would rather have Booth and DiVencenzo beat them than Brunson and Bridges, which is why West Virginia should try to stop the pair of Villanova backcourt superstars.

PITTSBURGH, PA - MARCH 17: Phil Booth #5 of the Villanova Wildcats dunks the ball against John Petty #23 of the Alabama Crimson Tide during the second half in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at PPG PAINTS Arena on March 17,

The goal for West Virginia is to limit three-point opportunities and force the Wildcats inside, where Sagaba Konate imposes his will and swats away field-goal attempts from the Villanova guards.

The stakes are higher on the other end of floor, as West Virginia doesn't contain as much dynamic depth on its roster. The key for Villanova is to silence Carter's impact on the contest.

If the Wildcats shut down Carter, a task few teams achieved this season, they'll cruise into the Elite 8.

Pair of No. 9 Seeds Face Huge Challenges

In a year where upsets have become a normal occurrence, there's potential for one of the two No. 9 seeds left in the tournament to clinch a surprise trip to the Elite 8.

However, Kansas State and Florida State face two of the most difficult tasks of the Sweet 16, as they have to contain No. 5 Kentucky and No. 4 Gonzaga, respectively.

Bruce Weber's Wildcats took an easier path to the second weekend of the tournament since they avoided a clash with No. 1 Virginia and instead knocked off No. 16 UMBC in the second round.

After shooting just under 50 percent from the field and three-point range against No. 8 Creighton in the first round, the Wildcats struggled to score 50 points and knocked down one of their 12 three-point attempts against UMBC.

In order to keep pace with Kentucky, Kansas State needs to replicate the shooting performance from the Creighton victory.

Kansas State is going to face some difficulty dealing with Kentucky's length and pure talent, and it's also going to suffer from a lack of experience winning big games throughout the regular season.

The Wildcats from the Big 12 went 2-6 against ranked opposition in conference play, with their only victories coming in January against Oklahoma and TCU.

Florida State comes into its clash with Gonzaga following an impressive come-from-behind win over No. 1 Xavier.

The 75-70 win occurred due to a few factors, including Xavier losing J.P. Macura, who fouled out with the score tied and two minutes left on the clock.

NASHVILLE, TN - MARCH 18: Phil Cofer #0 of the Florida State Seminoles reacts after defeating the Xavier Musketeers in the second round of the 2018 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament at Bridgestone Arena on March 18, 2018 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo b

P.J. Savoy, who was one of three Seminoles to score in double digits off the bench, put his team ahead for good with a three-point shot, and Leonard Hamilton's squad finished off the game at the free-throw line.

In order to knock off Gonzaga, Florida State needs the same variety it got from the win over Xavier, and it must keep Killian Tillie quiet in the paint.

Senior Phil Cofer will be one of the players tasked with silencing Gonzaga's frontcourt threat, and if the Seminoles are able to cut off that part of the Bulldogs offense, they have a chance of moving on to the Elite 8.
