Updated March Madness Bracket
Purdue 76, Butler 73
Dakota Mathias hit a clutch jumper from three-point range with less than 15 seconds left to help Purdue hold off a late rally from Butler and earn a berth in the Sweet 16.
The Boilermakers, who are playing without star center Isaac Haas because of an elbow fracture, led by 10 with just over six minutes to play. The Bulldogs surged back within two in the final minutes, but they could never get back level as a game-tying attempt from Kamar Baldwin at the buzzer hit the back of the iron.
Here's a look at the crucial shot from Mathias:
Vincent Edwards led the offensive charge for Purdue with 20 points. Mathias tallied 11 points, five rebounds and four assists in addition to his late-game heroics.
Kelan Martin posted a game-high 29 points in a losing effort for Butler. Baldwin (14) was the only other member of the Bulldogs to reach double figures in scoring.
Syracuse 55, Michigan State 53
The Orange recorded just three assists, knocked down a single three-point shot and lost the rebounding battle 51-30—and they still knocked off the Spartans, who were viewed as a legitimate title contender.
Syracuse's zone defense caused fits for Michigan State all afternoon. It shot 25.8 percent from the field, including 21.6 percent on three-pointers, and failed to capitalize on 29 offensive rebounds. Tom Izzo's squad also turned the ball over 14 times.
Here's a look at some highlights from the defensive battle:
Tyus Battle, who made only four of his 15 attempts, led the Orange with 17 points. Oshae Brissett added 15 points and nine boards.
Joshua Langford typified the Spartans struggles as he connected on one of his 12 shots. Nick Ward was the only player to shoot better than 50 percent, going four of five for 10 points in the loss.
Texas A&M 86, North Carolina 65
Wow. The fact the Aggies pulled off the upset isn't a massive surprise. The ease in which they rolled past the Tar Heels is a shocker.
They dominated pretty much every facet of the game from start to finish. They shot 51.7 percent from the field, drained 10 threes, out-rebounded the No. 2 seed 50-36 and held the Tar Heels' typically explosive offense to 33.3 percent shooting.
Put it all together and A&M looked like a serious threat heading into the second week:
Four different Aggies scored at least 12 points, led by TJ Starks with 21. Robert Williams tallied eight points, 13 rebounds and two blocks to set the tone in the post.
Joel Berry II ended with UNC career with 21 points, five assists, two assists and two steals. Luke Maye (13 points) was the only other Tar Heel to hit double digits in scoring in the stunningly poor offensive outing, which came at the worst possible time.
Nevada 75, Cincinnati 73
Upset remained the day's operative word as Josh Hall grabbed an offensive rebound and delivered the game-winning floater for the Wolf Pack in the final seconds.
Cincinnati led by 22, 65-43, with less than 12 minutes left on the clock. Nevada responded by ending the contest on a 32-8 run to send another championship contender packing in Round 2.
Hall played the role of hero for Mountain West Conference regular-season champs:
Cody Martin tallied 25 points, seven assists and six boards in the massive Nevada comeback. Jordan Caroline also shined with 13 points, seven rebounds and five dimes.
Kyle Washington and Gary Clark each recorded a double-double for Cincinnati.
Clemson 84, Auburn 53
There are often big margins of victory in the first round, but you don't expect this in the second.
Clemson demolished Auburn Sunday on its way to its first Sweet 16 since 1997. The No. 5 seed went up 43-19 at halftime and built the lead to as much as 41 points in the second half before closing out a dominant win.
Gabe DeVoe has 22 points, five rebounds and five assists while shooting 6-of-9 from three-point range, but the real strength of the Tigers came on defense.
Auburn was held to just 25.8 percent shooting, including 7-of-32 from three-point range. The team just never got into a rhythm offensively and it led to a disappointing exit for the SEC regular-season champions.
Clemson is now one of three ACC teams remaining in the Midwest region, although its next game will come against the only exception in No. 1 seed Kansas.
Kansas State 50, UMBC 41
Two days after pulling off the biggest upset in NCAA tournament history, the magic ran out for UMBC Sunday.
The Retrievers were held to less than 30 percent shooting from the field and beyond the arc, even struggling at the free-throw line while going 9-of-18. These struggles, plus 17 turnovers, prevented the No. 16 seed from pulling ahead on the scoreboard.
This was a major turnaround from the squad that knocked off No. 1 seeded Virginia in the first round, torching the top defense in the country with 74 points on 54.2 percent shooting. Jairus Lyles scored 28 points last game but just 12 in Round 2.
Kansas State deserves plenty of credit for its defensive efforts, although it couldn't do much offensively either outside of 18 points from Barry Brown. Still, this was enough to advance to the Sweet 16 for an upcoming matchup against Kentucky.
Florida State 75, Xavier 70
Another No. 1 seed has been eliminated as Florida State upset top-seeded Xavier in the round of 32.
The Musketeers were in control most of the second half while leading by as many as 12 points, but a stalled offense allowed Florida State to get back in the game, eventually taking the lead on a P.J. Savoy three-pointer with 1:12 remaining.
Savoy hit his free throws on the next possession, helping the Seminoles close the game on an 18-4 run to win.
J.P. Macura scored 17 for Xavier but fouled out with about two minutes remaining on a charge, making it even tougher for the favorites to stay in front. Top scorer Trevon Bluiett was held to just eight points in the loss.
With five players in double figures, FSU had no trouble getting points late and advanced to the Sweet 16. The squad will meet Gonzaga in the next round.
West Virginia 94, Marshall 71
A battle between in-state rivals failed to live up to the hype as West Virginia easily handled Marshall for a second-round win.
The Mountaineers had a 19-0 run in the first half to take over, leading 42-25 at the half. The second half was even better offensively for the favorites, scoring 52 points in the blowout win.
While WVU is known for its defense, the offense was extremely efficient with 50 percent shooting from the field, 48 percent from three-point range and 88.9 percent from the free-throw line.
Jevon Carter was the best player on the floor with 28 points and four steals in the win.
Although Marshall continued to fight with 46 points scored in the second half, the deficit was too large to overcome.
West Virginia will now try to keep the momentum in the regional semifinals against Villanova.
