NCAA Tournament 2018: Updated Results for Friday's March Madness First Round

Jeremy EcksteinMar 16, 2018

Folks hoping for a day full of upsets were disappointed during the opening slate. But they got a historic payoff by the end of the night.

After Arizona and Miami fell hard Thursday, the top overall team, Virginia, suffered the greatest upset in NCAA men's tournament history late Friday night at the hands of Maryland-Baltimore County.

Read along for the most thrilling finishes, spectacular shots and star performances from Day 2 of the tournament.

Never Say Never

No. 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament came into 2018 at 132-0. They came into Friday night's slate 135-0. After Maryland-Baltimore County's 74-54 win over the Virginia Cavaliers, No. 1s are now 135-1.

The Retrievers are the one in 135-1.

There are plenty of factors to point to when trying to explain this monumental upset. UMBC's defense, Virginia getting rattled and the old "make-or-miss game" cliche all apply. But the biggest reason for this result may well be Jairus Lyles.

The 6'2" senior, who came into the night averaging 20.2 points per game, had 28 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 from three. He carried such a load for the Retrievers that he had to head off the floor momentarily with seven minutes left to deal with cramps.

He came right back in and scored six more to help hold off the tournament's No. 1 overall seed.

After the miraculous, first-of-its-kind win, UMBC will face Kansas State in the round of 32 on Sunday.

More Busted Brackets and Overtime Drama

Marshall University head basketball coach Dan D'Antoni, the brother of Houston Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni, led the No. 13 seed Thundering Herd—who hadn't made a tournament appearance since 1987—to a stunning 81-75 win over the No. 4 seed Wichita State Shockers in the East Regional.

The Thundering Herd used 12 steals and nine three-pointers to seal the school's first-ever win in the NCAA tournament. Junior guard Jon Elmore played the hero with 27 points. Despite being out-rebounded 44-30, Marshall slowed the pace, dove for balls and got help from its supporting cast to pull out its March miracle.

No. 11 Syracuse also scored an upset Friday, knocking off No. 6 TCU, 57-52. Marek Dolezaj led the Orange with 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting.

Earlier, the No. 7 Nevada Wolfpack survived a game-long scare from the No. 10 Texas Longhorns, winning 87-83. Texas was up nearly the entire game and led by as much as 14 in the second half.

The Longhorns just couldn't stop Nevada's Caleb Martin when it mattered most. Martin struggled with his shot for most of the game, but he hit critical back-to-back threes during extra time on the way to victory.

Martin finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

Critical Injury for No. 2 Seed

Although the Purdue Boilermakers cruised to a 74-48 win over No. 15 Cal State Fullerton, they suffered a crucial loss as 7'2" center Isaac Haas will not play the remainder of the tournament after suffering a fractured right elbow with 8:49 remaining in the second half.

The senior leader is the anchor of the Boilermakers. He averaged 14.9 points and 5.6 rebounds per game prior to the tournament, and he's a notable defensive presence. He had nine points and 10 rebounds against the Titans, but the road will be much tougher ahead.

Purdue's loss coupled with Marshall's upset of Wichita State makes the East Region easier for No. 1 seed Villanova and No. 3 seed Texas Tech.

Did You See This?

Bucknell was doing all it could to make Michigan State uncomfortable on Friday. Miles Bridges repaid the favor and then some with this nasty putback dunk to extend the Spartans' lead:

And of course, that wasn't the only big dunk of the day. This windmill from Texas A&M's Robert Williams helped close out Providence. The 73-69 victory moves the No. 7 Aggies to the second round Sunday for a showdown against No. 2 seed North Carolina.

Stars of the Day

Michigan State needed every one of Bridges' 29 points to beat underdog Bucknell, 82-78. In the second half, he reminded the Bison why he's projected to go in the first round of this summer's NBA draft, pumping in 19 points. He added nine boards and four assists in the contest.

Marshall junior guard Jon Elmore filled up the stat sheet with 27 points, four assists and four rebounds. He showed off his range continually all afternoon, burying 4-of-8 from long range.

Cincinnati sophomore guard Jarron Cumberland punched in 27 points and 11 rebounds as the workhorse, playing all 40 minutes in the Bearcats win over Georgia State. It's his career-high scoring effort and only the second time this season he had at least 20 points.

In the evening slate, Xavier's J.P. Macura set new career highs for points (29) and field goals (11), and he tied his career-high five steals in the Musketeers' 102-83 win over Texas Southern.

You can read about the lengths rival fans go to heckle Macura, widely held as NCAA basketball's top trash-talker, in Jason King's profile from earlier this week.

What to Watch Saturday

Villanova, the East Regional's No. 1 seed, will tip off Saturday's action at 12:10 p.m. ET on CBS against Collin Sexton and the No. 9-seeded Alabama Crimson Tide at PPG Paints Arena.

In his first tournament game, Sexton scored 25 points, dished out six assists and led the Tide to an upset over Virginia Tech. Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges and the Wildcats will be heavy favorites, but upstart Alabama isn't likely to go down quietly.

In the next game, Duke will take on Rhode Island at 2:40 p.m. on CBS. And the Blue Devils have one of the prime rosters for NBA fans. Marvin Bagley III is a consensus top-five pick in this June's draft. Wendell Carter Jr. is likely to go in the lottery as well. Will all the raw talent lead to a deep tournament run?

That question's perennially on the table for the Kentucky Wildcats as well, who will take on the No. 13 seed Buffalo Bulls at 5:15 p.m. on CBS. Buffalo is coming off the tournament's biggest upset so far, as it sent Deandre Ayton and the No. 4 Arizona Wildcats packing on Thursday.

Another double-digit seed will be in action after Buffalo, as No. 11 Loyola-Chicago will look to follow up the magic of Thursday's buzzer-beater over Miami with another strong performance against No. 3 Tennessee at 6:10 p.m. on TNT.

Finally, Thursday's high scorer, Rob Gray, will be in action as his Houston Cougars take on Michigan at 9:40 p.m. on TBS.
