Villanova entered the tournament as the co-betting favorite with Virginia to win the national championship, per OddsShark. The Wildcats lived up to those high expectations in the opening round with an 87-61 victory over Radford.
Six different players reached double figures in scoring for the Cats, led by Jalen Brunson with 16. They connected on 14 of their 27 three-point attempts and assisted on 20 of their 31 baskets to make an early statement against an overmatched Highlanders squad.
Meanwhile, Loyola and Buffalo relished completely different types of upsets Thursday.
The Ramblers stunned the Miami Hurricanes on a last-second three by Donte Ingram:
The Bulls crushed prized NBA draft prospect Deandre Ayton and the Arizona Wildcats, outscoring the popular Final Four pick 49-30 in the second half:
Both Loyola-Chicago and Buffalo played well enough to believe their March Madness appearances could extend into the second week. So their opponents, Tennessee and Kentucky, will be on high alert heading into Saturday's jam-packed slate of games.
