CBB Recruiting 2018: Ranking 10 Best Classes After McDonald's All-American Game

David KenyonMar 28, 2018

The McDonald's All-American Game featured 24 of the nation's best college basketball prospects, and many of them are also the reason their prospective school has a top recruiting class.

Six teams had multiple representatives at the event, and all six programs hold top-eight spots in the 2018 recruiting rankings.

Largely because 21 of the 24 participants have already committed or signed to a school, the McDAAG didn't include in-game commitmentssomething that's popular with football showcases.

However, the exhibition offered many fans of a few programs a glimpse at their top remaining target. Five-stars Romeo Langford, E.J. Montgomery and Jordan Brown may have a significant impact on the rankings in the future.

But right now, we're focused on the players who have announcedor officially declaredtheir college destination.

10. Maryland Terrapins

1 of 10

247Sports composite ranking: 14

5-star recruits: Jalen Smith (6'10" PF)

4-star recruits: Aaron Wiggins (6'6" SF), Eric Ayala (6'5" G)

Name to know: Jalen Smith

After another excellent season at Mount Saint Joseph, Smith earned Player of the Year honors in the Baltimore Catholic League for the second straight year. The 6'10" forward swatted three shots per game both as a junior and senior, averaging 24 points and 14 rebounds this past season. He should be an immediate contributor for Maryland.

Number to know: 16.9

That's the highest number of average minutes departing from the 2017-18 roster, and the Terps only lose two rotation players. Unlike some situations, Maryland doesn't have guaranteed playing time for freshmen. But after a 19-13 season, the Terps won't be tied to their returning contributors, either.

9. Villanova Wildcats

2 of 10

247Sports composite ranking: 12

5-star recruits: Jahvon Quinerly (6'0" PG)

4-star recruits: Cole Swider (6'7" F), Brandon Slater (6'6" SG)

Name to know: Jahvon Quinerly

In the near futurewhether it's immediately next season or the 2019-20 campaignJalen Brunson will no longer lead the Villanova backcourt. Quinerly will be expected to fill that massive void. He's a versatile finisher at the rim who also shows excellent vision and offers a long-distance scoring threat.

Number to know: 47.1

Only a handful of teams attempt more three-pointers than Villanova, which launched 47.1 percent of its total field-goal attempts from beyond the arc in 2017-18. That ranks 14th nationally. Brandon Slater and Cole Swider have the potential to be true three-point marksmen, while Quinerly can stretch the floor.

8. UCLA Bruins

3 of 10

247Sports composite ranking: 3

5-star recruits: Moses Brown (7'0" C)

4-star recruits: Shareef O'Neal (6'9" PF), Jules Bernard (6'6" SG), David Singleton (6'5" SG), Tyger Campbell (6'0" PG)

Name to know: Shareef O'Neal

Yes, he's the son of NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal. However, that's not the only reason Shareef is highlighted. The young forward wasn't expected to attend UCLA. He had committed to Arizona but backed off once a report emerged about head coach Sean Miller allegedly setting up a frowned-upon payment for Deandre Ayton.

Number to know: 6'9"

The Bruins are set to lose a trio of players 6'9" or taller, but they're replacing Thomas Welsh, Gyorgy Goloman and Ikenna Okwarabizie with Moses Brown, O'Neal and 3-star Kenneth Nwuba. Brown, the lone 5-star of the incoming group, averaged 14.2 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.1 blocks on the AAU circuit last year.

7. North Carolina Tar Heels

4 of 10

247Sports composite ranking: 8

5-star recruits: Nassir Little (6'7" SF), Coby White (6'5" G)

4-star recruits: Rechon Black (6'7" SF)

Name to know: Nassir Little

Soon after the news of the FBI investigation broke, it was reported Little fit the description of an unnamed player in the allegations. But under oath, both he and his father denied any wrongdoing by the family or the connected school, Miami. Little assuredly will be eager to make his name known for something on the court at UNC.

Number to know: 3,573

Coby White scored a couple of points once in a while during his high school career. The sweet-shooting guard set a North Carolina record with 3,573 total, earning back-to-back Gatorade Player of the Year honors in the state. He averaged 31.1 points as a senior, adding 10 rebounds and eight assists to an impressive stat line.

6. Vanderbilt Commodores

5 of 10

247Sports composite ranking: 7

5-star recruits: Simisola Shittu (6'9" PF), Darius Garland (6'1" PG)

4-star recruits: Aaron Nesmith (6'5" SF)

Name to know: Simi Shittu

The second-ranked power forward in the 2018 class, Shittu will arrive at Vanderbilt with a mountain of hype and expectation. But he also has recovering to do. In late January, Shittu underwent surgery to repair a torn right ACL. Since Shittu is hoping to be a one-and-done and has the talent to do it, his health will be monitored especially closely.

Number to know: 16

In the 16-year history of the 247Sports composite ranking, Vanderbilt has never enjoyed a higher finish. Not only have the Commodores rarely been in the top 50, but the program only previously attained top-20 status in 2004 (No. 16) and 2008 (No. 19).

5. Kentucky Wildcats

6 of 10

247Sports composite ranking: 6

5-star recruits: Keldon Johnson (6'6" SG), Immanuel Quickley (6'3" PG)

4-star recruits: Tyler Herro (6'5" SG)

Name to know: Immanuel Quickley

Kentucky's extended run in the tournament allowed Shai Gilgeous-Alexander some extra exposure to impress on the national scene. He took advantage of those opportunities, so it's possible he bolts for the NBA. That should mean Quickley fills an important role during the 2018-19 season. If he's not starting, he'll likely be the immediate backup for Quade Green.

Number to know: 10

John Calipari is the definition of an elite recruiter. For the 10th straight cycle, Kentucky secured at least two 5-star recruits. Keldon Johnson and Quickley continue the trend that started with John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins in the 2009 class. That's certainly not bad company.

4. Kansas Jayhawks

7 of 10

247Sports composite ranking: 5

5-star recruits: Quentin Grimes (6'5" G), Devon Dotson (6'2" PG)

4-star recruits: David McCormack (6'9" C), Ochai Agbaji (6'5 ½" SF)

Name to know: Devon Dotson

Devonte' Graham's next step is the NBA, and his departure will create an opportunity for both Cal transfer Charlie Moore and Dotson. The latter averaged 28.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists for Providence Day as a senior. Dotson earned CISAA Player of the Year honors in consecutive seasons to close out his high school career.

Number to know: 52

Quentin Grimes, whose mother attended Kansas, has the ability to torch a box score. In early February, he poured in 52 points during a 117-57 victory. On the season, Grimes narrowly outscored his 5-star counterpart Dotson, registering 29.5 points per game. He also provided 8.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists for College Park.

3. LSU Tigers

8 of 10

247Sports composite ranking: 4

5-star recruits: Nazreon Reid (6'9" PF), Emmitt Williams (6'7" PF)

4-star recruits: Ja'Vonte Smart (6'4" G), Darius Days (6'7" PF)

Name to know: Ja'Vonte Smart

Though both Nazreon Reid and Emmitt Williams are 5-stars, LSU coach Will Wade is expecting Smart to bring some swag to a roster lacking energy. "On top of the basketball stuff Ja'Vonte's going to bring us, he's going to bring us a pride and a personality that we don't have," Wade said, per Billy Embody of 247Sports.

Number to know: 3

It's the number of weeks LSU has been ranked in the AP Top 25 since the beginning of the 2009-10 season. The arrival of Ben Simmons propelled the Tigers into the 2015-16 preseason poll, but they were never ranked after December. The 2018 class will join Tremont Waters and Skyler Mays and attempt to make LSU an AP mainstay.

2. Oregon Ducks

9 of 10

247Sports composite ranking: 2

5-star recruits: Bol Bol (7'1" C), Louis King (6'8" SF)

4-star recruits: Will Richardson (6'4" SG), Miles Norris (6'10" PF)

Name to know: Louis King

Over the last decade, the only 5-stars Oregon signed hailed from California or Nevada. But in this class, Dana Altman and Co. managed to swipe one from the opposite side of the country. Louis King, a teammate of Villanova-bound Jahvon Quinerly at Hudson Catholic in New Jersey, averaged 15.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists.

Number to know: 2.3

The son of 7'7" former NBA center Manute, Bol Bol is expected to give Oregon its next great shot-blocking presence. Over the last four years, Jordan Bell, Chris Boucher and Kenny Wooten have supplied an average of 2.3-plus swats a combined five times. Bol, who is 7'3", blocked 2.4 shots per game as a senior at Findlay Prep, per MaxPreps.

1. Duke Blue Devils

10 of 10

247Sports composite ranking: 1

5-star recruits: R.J. Barrett (6'7" SF), Cam Reddish (6'7" SF), Zion Williamson (6'6" PF), Tre Jones (6'2" PG)

4-star recruits: None

Name to know: R.J. Barrett

Zion Williamson is popular because of his earth-shaking dunks, but Barrett is a one-man show in a different sense. During the FIBA U19 World Cup, the Canadian forward obliterated the John Calipari-coached U.S. team for 38 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. As Marvin Bagley III did from 2018 to 2017, Barrett reclassified from 2019 to 2018.

Number to know: 15

In the 2018 class, there are 27 5-star prospects. As if it's not impressive enough that Duke has attracted four of them, the combined ranking of Barrett, Cam Reddish, Williamson and Tre Jones is 15. The first three players, in fact, are ranked No. 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Jones, the brother of former Duke and current Minnesota Timberwolves guard Tyus Jones, sits at No. 9 overall.
