Stanford 86, BYU 83

BYU missed an opportunity to force overtime when T.J. Haws' three-point attempt missed as the clock expired, giving Stanford an 86-83 victory.

Reid Travis was a one-man wrecking crew for the Cardinal. He had 25 points and 14 rebounds for his sixth straight double-double. Michael Humphrey contributed a double-double of his own with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

The difference in the game was the third quarter when Stanford outscored BYU 26-13. It was the only quarter in which the Cardinal had the scoring advantage.

BYU had four different starters reach double figures in scoring. Elijah Bryant and Yoeli Childs matched Travis and Humphrey in the double-double department.

Washington 77, Boise State 74

Washington was able to hold off Boise State's comeback effort in a 77-74 win in the first round of the NIT.

After trailing by 17 points in the second quarter, the Broncos used a 24-12 run in the third quarter to get within five points.

Boise State finally ran out of gas in the fourth quarter when Washington used a 10-4 run to go back up by 11 points with 3:36 remaining. Jaylen Nowell led the Huskies with 25 points and six rebounds.

Chandler Hutchison used everything in his arsenal to carry Boise State to victory. The senior scored 39 points on 11-of-17 shooting and grabbed 14 rebounds.

This marks Washington's first postseason victory since the 2016 NIT first round.

Mississippi State 66, Nebraska 59

Mississippi State rode a slew of second-chance opportunities to a 66-59 victory over Nebraska at Humphrey Coliseum.

The Bulldogs had a 47-30 rebounding advantage, including 16 on the offensive glass. Lamar Peters had an unusual game with zero points on 0-of-3 shooting, but he had 14 of the team's 16 assists in the win.

Aric Holman was a star off the bench for Mississippi State. He had his second double-double in three games, contributing 16 points and 10 assists in just 19 minutes.

Nebraska had no answers offensively against Mississippi State, shooting just 23-of-65 from the field. The Cornhuskers did have three players reach double figures in scoring, but no one had more than 13 points.

Despite the loss, Nebraska's 22-10 record this season is its best showing since 1990-91.

Mississippi State will take on Baylor in the second round.

Utah 69, UC Davis 59

Justin Bibbins paced Utah's offense in a 69-59 win over the UC Davis in the first round of the NIT on Wednesday.

The Utes' senior star finished with 21 points and six rebounds. It's his third straight game with at least 20 points, the first time he's done that this season.

There was a huge disparity in free throws in the game. Utah went 20-of-25 from the free-throw line, compared to just 8-of-10 for UC Davis. The Aggies did have a balanced offensive output with all five starters scoring at least eight points, led by A.J. John's 11 points.

Utah will host LSU at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in the second round.

Penn State 63, Temple 57

Penn State won an ugly defensive battle over Temple to keep its season and NIT championship hopes alive.

Neither team shot the ball well, with the Nittany Lions hitting just 36.7 percent of their attempts. They were able to overcome that shortcoming by making more free throws (20) than Temple attempted (14).

Josh Reaves was the only Penn State starter to make more than two field goals. The junior had a season-high 19 points and 11 rebounds. Nazeer Bostick was excellent off the bench with 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting.

Temple started the fourth quarter with a 50-44 lead before going ice cold on offense. It made just two field goals over an eight-minute stretch from the 9:22 mark until Quinton Rose's three-pointer with nine seconds remaining.

The Nittany Lions earned their 22nd win of the season, their most since 2008-09. This is also their first postseason win since the first round of the 2014 College Basketball Invitational.

LSU 84, Louisiana 76

LSU got strong play on both sides of the ball to knock off in-state rival Louisiana 84-76 in a first-round NIT matchup.

The Tigers shot 52.7 percent from the field, though they only went 4-of-18 from three-point range. Duop Reath was a matchup problem for Louisiana all game with 26 points and 11 rebounds. He also had a season-high four blocks in the win.

Brandon Sampson chipped in with 18 points for LSU in his highest-scoring game since Nov. 16 against Samford.

LSU head coach Will Wade also got an excellent defensive showing from his team. The Tigers held Louisiana to 27-of-74 shooting.

Frank Bartley IV, who had 21 points, was one of the only Ragin Cajuns' players able to break through the LSU wall. Johnathan Stove added 17 for Louisiana, while Marcus Stroman chipped in with a double-double of his own that included 12 points and 13 rebounds but shot just 3-of-8 from the field.

Marquette 67, Harvard 60

Marquette was able to survive Harvard's fourth-quarter rally to earn a spot in the NIT second round.

After trailing by 19 points early in the final quarter, Harvard went on a 21-10 run that closed the deficit to five points with 15 seconds remaining. Time proved to be too much of a factor for the Crimson to complete the comeback.

Andrew Rowsey's free throws with 11 seconds left sealed the win for Marquette. The senior guard was held to 15 points, his lowest output since a Feb. 7 win over Seton Hall.

The Golden Eagles were led by sophomore Markus Howard's 22 points. He went a perfect 9-of-9 from the free-throw line, grabbed three rebounds, dished out three assists and had three steals in the win.

Harvard hurt itself by committing 22 turnovers and going just 9-of-17 from the charity stripe. Justin Bassey did everything he could to help the Crimson stay alive by posting his second double-double of the season with a career-high 19 points and 12 rebounds.
