Michigan State is ranked No. 5 in the AP poll and as a No. 3 seed in the tournament, which shows the vast difference between how the committee and poll voters rank it. The Spartans lost their second game in the Big Ten tournament to eventual champion Michigan, which ascended to the No. 7 spot nationally in the AP poll. The Wolverines are also a No. 3 seed in the tournament.
The committee was also much higher on North Carolina than the writers, ranking the Tar Heels fifth among their Top 68. Roy Williams' team comes in 10th in the final AP poll of the season after unseating Duke in the conference tournament semis before losing to Virginia.
The most glaring disparity between the pollsters and the committee is Saint Mary's. The Gaels finished the regular season as the No. 25 team in the country, according to the writers, but was not among the at-large teams selected in the field. Saint Mary's was not even the final team on the bubble—that distinction went to Notre Dame.
"I've been consistent on this for a while now," coach Randy Bennett said, per Steve Kroner of the SFGate. "You don't know how to score the game. They go in a back room and they decide. It makes you wonder. I know this: The back room doesn't favor the mid-majors. That's for sure."
Kentucky, which won the SEC tournament, was the only team to make a leap into the Top 25.
