ACC Tournament 2018: Semifinals Scores, Championship Bracket and Schedule

Kyle NewportMar 9, 2018

The 2018 ACC men's basketball tournament moved one step closer to crowning a champion as it reached the semifinals on Friday at the Barclays Center.

A doubleheader featuring the top-seeded Virginia Cavaliers and the Clemson Tigers followed by the rubber match for the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Duke Blue Devils set the stage for an entertaining night of basketball in the ACC. Three of the last four ACC tournaments have been won by one of these semifinalists, with Clemson as the only team without title during that span.

Regardless of the outcome of the rubber match, the ACC championship game will feature at least Duke or Carolina for the 22nd consecutive year.

Semifinals Recap

Virginia 64, Clemson 58

After holding the Clemson Tigers to just 36 points back in January, the Virginia Cavaliers were back at it in the ACC tournament semifinals.

Clemson jumped out to a seven-point lead behind an 8-of-13 start from the floor. Then the Virginia defense stepped up. The Tigers went the final 9:33 of the first half without a bucket—getting just three free throws to break an eight-minute scoring drought—to watch a 20-13 lead turn into a 32-23 halftime deficit.

That's the type of defense that has propelled the Cavaliers to a 30-2 record.

Clemson shook off a rough end to the opening half by coming out of the locker room ready to play. A 7-2 run cut the deficit to just four. But once again, the Cavaliers' defense responded, holding the Tigers scoreless for more than four minutes midway through the half.

The Tigers didn't go away quietly, but in the end, they weren't able to make enough plays to pull of the upset. Oddly, the Cavaliers didn't make a single free throw (0-of-4) during the first 39:39 in the game, but they did make three in the final 21 seconds to put the game away.

Sophomore Kyle Guy led the way for Virginia with 15 points, while Clemson forward Elijah Thomas had 15 points and seven rebounds in a losing effort.

Now, Virginia awaits the Duke-North Carolina winner in the championship game as it looks for its first ACC tournament title since 2014.

North Carolina 74, Duke 69

Round 3 went to the Tar Heels.

Six days after Duke evened the season series with a win over North Carolina at Cameron Indoor Stadium, the Tar Heels exacted revenge and punched their ticket to the ACC title game by downing the Blue Devils, 74-69.

North Carolina's offense wasn't exactly prolific, as its 39.4 percent conversion rate from the field suggested. However, the Tar Heels finished the night with five double-figure scorers and 24 assists on 28 made buckets as they picked Duke's zone apart all night long.

Luke Maye led the way with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while wings Cameron Johnson and Kenny Williams dropped 10 points apiece.

Not to be overlooked was Theo Pinson, who piled up eight points, seven assists, four boards and three steals in another complete effort.

The Blue Devils featured four double-figure scorers of their own who combined for all 69 of Duke's points.

Gary Trent Jr. topped the charts with 20 points, while Marvin Bagley III registered a 19-point, 13-rebound double-double.

North Carolina will now set its sights on revenge against Virginia after the Cavaliers won the only regular-season meeting, 61-49, back on Jan. 6.
