LaVar Ball Coaches LaMelo to 40-Point Triple-Double, LiAngelo to 31 in Win

Tyler ConwayJan 28, 2018

LaVar Ball's first foray into being a professional basketball coach was a successful one.

LaMelo Ball had a triple-double and LiAngelo added 31 points, leading Prienu Vytautas to a 151-120 victory over Jonava in the final game of the Big Baller Brand Challenge in Lithuania.

LaMelo had 40 points, 10 assists and 11 rebounds to fill up the stat sheet in another strong game as a pro. He played with a relaxed, exciting flair that made it clear he's getting more comfortable playing overseas.

LiAngelo had 31 points on a solid shooting performance and played nearly the entire game. The two Ball brothers were the best players on the floor for Vytautas for most of the game—at least on the offensive end. Defense remained optional for large stretches for both teams, neither side seeming especially motivated to lock down.

LaVar Ball served as Vytautas' head coach for Sunday's game after being an assistant in Tuesday's win. LiAngelo and LaMelo combined for 80 points in Tuesday's game and have clearly performed better with their father on the bench.

"LaVar wants the team to play fast," Vytautas coach Virginijus Seskus told ESPN on Tuesday. "He also has an idea for a new way for the team to play defense, so we're going to try it out tonight. Today we'll be like two equal coaches, but this will only be for the friendly match. We'll see how it goes today."

"Why not let him do it? It's only a friendly match. It will end, and everyone will forget about it."

Vytautas went undefeated in the Big Baller Brand Challenge games, which were glorified exhibitions against lower-level talent. Vytautas did not give many minutes to their top stars for league play in these contests, instead using them as an understandable showcase for the Ball family.

LaVar, in typical fashion, made it clear he wanted his team to play in an uptempo fashion, calling his strategy "Operation Beatdown."

"Run fast, have fun and let's whup that ass," Ball said during his pregame speech.

The team has not fared as well so far this season in upper-league play, sitting in last place at 4-17. The Ball brothers are expected to play minimally in those contests this season and get their most playing time when Vytautas plays lower-league competition.
