Jose Reyes Collects 500th Stolen Base of 15-Year Career
New York Mets infielder Jose Reyes went 1-for-4 with a run and a stolen base during Monday's 5-3 victory over the San Diego Padres. In doing so, he recorded the 500th steal of his 15-year career, per ESPN Stats & Info.
The 34-year-old infielder, who made his MLB debut back in 2003 as a 19-year-old, is one of only two active players with 500 steals. The other is 43-year-old Ichiro Suzuki, who has swiped 508 bases.
Reyes has struggled at the plate this season, slashing a poor .229/.288/.395 with nine round-trippers. That said, he still has a chance to crack 20 stolen bases, stealing 12 while getting caught twice through the Mets' first 97 games.
Though he hasn't posted the best numbers this year, Reyes has acquired some hardware throughout his career. Among the collection are four All-Star nods, a batting title (.337 average in 2011) and a Silver Slugger award in 2006 when he slashed .300/354/.487 with 19 homers and 64 stolen bases. He also led the MLB in steals for three consecutive seasons, totaling 202 between 2005-2007.
Reyes has picked things up since the All-Star break, batting .326/.316/.558 over 43 at-bats since the Midsummer Classic. While it's a good sign, the Mets may sit too far out of playoff contention to make a run.
Reyes will face starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin on Tuesday when the Mets take on the Padres in the second of a three-game series. Chacin sports a 9-7 record with a 4.26 ERA and 1.29 WHIP through 20 starts this season.
