Mike ChiariMar 10, 2017

Friday marked the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten tournament at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., with four spots in Saturday's semifinals on the line.

Several nationally ranked teams entered the day with a chance to come one step closer to a Big Ten title, including Purdue, Wisconsin and Maryland.

Here is a rundown of Friday's results, as well as a look ahead to Saturday's schedule.

Northwestern 72, Maryland 64

Northwestern's magical season continues with its first-ever appearance in the Big Ten tournament semifinals thanks to a 72-64 victory over Maryland.

The turning point came early in the second half when Maryland appeared to take control with an 8-0 run to start that extended its lead to 44-34. The Wildcats immediately responded with a 20-2 run that turned things back in their favor at 52-46.

Scottie Lindsey and Vic Law led Northwestern's scoring barrage with 17 points each, though they were followed closely by Bryant McIntosh's 16 points.

Despite the loss, Melo Trimble had his best scoring output since February 19 with 20 points. He was given problems by Northwestern's defense, as evidenced by his six turnovers.

There was little doubt about Northwestern's NCAA tournament credentials before the Big Ten tournament started, but now it's been made clear the program will finally get a taste of the big dance for the first time in its history.

The journey isn't over yet for head coach Chris Collins' team with a date against Wisconsin on Saturday. The Wildcats defeated the Badgers on February 12 and it'd be foolish to discount them at this point in the season.

Wisconsin 70, Indiana 60

Indiana's bubble likely burst Friday night after Wisconsin knocked off the Hoosiers, 70-60, at the Verizon Center.

Bronson Koenig (16 points, five assists) led a balanced performance from the Badgers, who saw five players scored in double-digit figures. James Blackmon Jr. led the way for Indiana with 17 points and eight rebounds.

The Hoosiers almost assuredly saw their NCAA tournament dreams die with the loss, as they entered the Big Ten tournament on the outside looking in on the postseason bubble. A trip to the NIT is in their future, while Wisconsin remains in the running to earn a coveted conference tournament title.

Minnesota 63, Michigan State 58

Minnesota took a step closer to a Big Ten conference title Friday, beating Michigan State 63-58.

Reggie Lynch led the way for the Golden Gophers, scoring 16 points and adding five blocks and four rebounds, while 20 points and seven rebounds from freshman phenom Miles Bridges wasn't enough for the Spartans.

While Michigan State likely has secured a spot in the NCAA tournament, the team certainly remains on the bubble at this point and will likely be looking at an eighth seed or lower. A conference title—or at least a deeper run—would have gone a long way to earning the team a better seed as it attempts to go on another one of Tom Izzo's patented deep postseason runs.

Michigan 74, Purdue 70 (OT)

Eighth-seeded Michigan may have solidified its place in the NCAA tournament field Friday, as it bounced No. 1 seed Purdue in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tourney.

The Wolverines tied the game with five seconds remaining in regulation and outlasted the Boilermakers in overtime.

Junior forward D.J. Wilson paced all scorers with 26 points for Michigan, and the Wolverines held Purdue big man Caleb Swanigan to 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting.
