Second-Round Predictions
No. 9 Miami vs. No. 8 Syracuse
In his last 11 games, senior guard Andrew White has averaged 21.6 points per game despite only scoring seven in two of those contests. He put up a whopping 40 against Georgia Tech on 8-of-9 three-point shooting in a 90-61 win over the Yellow Jackets to close the regular season.
White was the key when Syracuse beat Miami on January 4 as he scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a 70-55 win.
He's difficult to stop and never leaves the court (nor do most of the starters), playing the entire game in 10 straight contests before "only" playing 39 against the Yellow Jackets.
White will be the key in an Orange win over the Hurricanes.
Pick: Syracuse
No. 12 Clemson vs. No. 5 Duke
North Carolina State offered no challenge to Clemson on Tuesday, as the Wolfpack seemed to be going through the motions while the Tigers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, leading nearly wire-to-wire.
Duke will provide a much stiffer test for the Tigers, who are desperately fighting for at-large bid consideration. Right now, they are on the outside looking in to the NCAA tournament, per ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi.
The edge goes to Duke because of its NBA-level talent and deft outside shooting. Per nbadraft.net, three Blue Devils are projected to go in the first round of the 2017 NBA draft should they declare: Freshman forward Jayson Tatum, sophomore shooting guard Luke Kennard and freshman forward Harry Giles. That group doesn't even include junior guard Grayson Allen, who posts 14.5 points per game.
Clemson won't go down without a fight with so much at stake, but Duke should pull away late and win a close game.
Pick: Duke
No. 10 Wake Forest vs. No. 7 Virginia Tech
Many players around the country were turning it up a notch as the season drew to a close, but perhaps no one in Division I is playing better than sophomore big man John Collins.
Collins has registered a double-double in nine of his last 12 games, including Wake's win over BC, in which he put up 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Wake is on a four-game winning streak, punctuated by wins over Louisville and Virginia Tech, the latter of which just so happens to be the Demon Deacons' next opponent.
Give the edge to Wake, who is the hot team, has one of the hotter players in the country and needs a win to seal an at-large NCAA tournament bid.
Pick: Wake
No. 14 Pitt vs. No. 6 Virginia
Pitt is better than its No. 14 seeding suggests. The Panthers have an even .500 record and beat three teams in the top 25 of the Associated Press poll: Maryland, Florida State and Virginia.
However, UVA is also better than its seeding suggests. The Cavaliers defeated future No. 1 seed North Carolina, 53-43, nearly beat future No. 1 seed Villanova (losing at the buzzer in a 61-59 loss) and also took down Louisville twice and Notre Dame once.
The Cavaliers beat the Panthers, 67-42 on Saturday, so it's hard seeing the Panthers winning on Wednesday when they just lost to UVA so recently.
Pick: UVA
