NBA Rookies Embracing the Style Game
The NBA's revolving door of rookies comes and goes with the years. Each season, we are able to break down and figure out which guys are going to be stars, which ones will be bench stalwarts and who will become flat-out busts. It's part of the fun we all enjoy as fans.
Lost in the on-court, athletic trials and tribulations is what these young men pursue off the court. Thanks to NBA money and a continued love of style, a lot of rookies embrace the fashion game.
Out of the names selected on draft night, only a handful pull it off with flair. Analyzing this year's crop of rookies, here are a handful of names who have risen to the occasion.
Los Angeles Lakers Forward Brandon Ingram
1 of 7From donning Supreme box logo tops to skinny, shredded jeans and Yeezys, Los Angeles Lakers forward Brandon Ingram has leaped from his collegiate days at Duke to the City of Angels.
His on-court transition hasn't followed suit quite yet, but speaking in volumes of fashion, Ingram has been an NBA rookie to watch. His Instagram presence can be appreciated for a strong sense of streetwear.
A common thread you'll notice is his use of beanies. That longtime headwear staple has become a part of his persona, despite Los Angeles' seasonally warm conditions.
NBA rookies have the capital and means to build their closets up. Ingram's proof has been neatly dressed into the social media pudding.
Philadelphia 76ers Center Joel Embiid
2 of 7Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid was churning out quite the rookie campaign before suffering a season-ending knee injury, per the 76ers.
Posting up an average of 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game was enough to turn the Sixers from misfits to an outlier playoff contender in the Eastern Conference. Embiid was exciting on the court, as well as of it.
His style isn't as streetwear-oriented as Brandon Ingram. However, Embiid isn't shy showing off tighter-fitting suit jackets, expensively printed T-shirts and even knock-off Kanye West tour merchandise.
Like his game, Embiid's style is true to his personality. Oftentimes it's not about what you wear; it's about how you wear it.
Dallas Mavericks Guard Yogi Ferrell
3 of 7Yogi Ferrell's ascent from backup, rookie guard to Dallas Mavericks starter has been fun to watch. With Deron Williams off doing his thing in Cleveland, Ferrell has stepped into a new role.
Factoring out a slow-building sense of maturity on the floor, this former Indiana Hoosier has remained a top-end fashion star for the Mavericks. Using his Instagram account as the tell-all basis for our reporting, you'll notice that Ferrell has built a distinct look.
He isn't a victim to hype. Take this picture into consideration. Ferrell chose the all-black Nike SB Zoom Janowski. The shoe has never had much hype accompanying it—today, it remains readily available.
In a way, it's sort of like Ferrell himself. There wasn't any red carpet rolled out for him as an undrafted free agent. He's out in Dallas proving that he belongs.
Milwaukee Bucks Guard Malcolm Brogdon
4 of 7The Milwaukee Bucks have themselves quite the player in guard Malcolm Brogdon. He's slowly developing into an effective asset, averaging 9.9 points and four assists per game.
At 24 years old, he isn't the youngest rookie to emerge from this year's class. However, his maturity on the floor and history at Virginia has helped Brogdon give the Bucks a 2-guard they can count on.
Off the court, Brogdon's style is like his game: understated. His focus on a lack of patterns, opting for tonal approaches instead, has become a calling card, as you can see from his suit game posted above.
Brogdon has embraced the NBA's ever-growing style game, using subtlety as his ultimate weapon, and we're grateful for that.
Boston Celtics Forward Jaylen Brown
5 of 7With the Kanye West tour merchandise on full blast, Boston Celtics wingman Jaylen Brown has become a fashionable entity that all NBA rookies can look to for inspiration.
Brown's style takes streetwear cuts and meshes them with more formal items. Mixing those elements together has become a way of conducting business. Brown also seems like a rookie who takes risks. Don't take our word for it. Check out this hybrid rainboot cut he posted up on Instagram.
As he continues to improve and contribute to the Celtics' playoff hopes, Brown's fashion game will remain primed and ready for the NBA cameras.
Phoenix Suns Forward Marquese Chriss
6 of 7Marquese Chriss hasn't quite found himself this season, and that's fine. He isn't ready for the NBA spotlight quite yet. As a raw, ultra-under-developed product, the Phoenix Suns are taking the "throw him to the fire and let him learn" approach with the No. 8 pick in the 2016 draft.
In terms of embracing fashion, Chriss has taken major strides. Notice the suit featured above laced together with extended detailing. Simple, Nantucket prep style seems to work for him. It's also unique. You don't see many NBA athletes—rookies or veterans—going with that particular look.
Chriss deserves to be mentioned for his taste levels, especially in formal wear. He's proved that.
Philadelphia 76ers Guard Ben Simmons
7 of 7Ben Simmons hasn't suited up for a single NBA game this season, yet his presence still looms over the Philadelphia 76ers. Simmons has been anointed the chosen one. There's a sense of excitement brewing, with the possibility of him and Joel Embiid playing together.
The former No. 1 pick has used his presence to put fashion on display. Loitering on the sidelines, we've seen Simmons use almost a Cary Grant-like approach to suits—see above—as well as displaying John Elliott hoodies alongside Allen Iverson.
Simmons' also happens to be a Nike athlete. So, his sneaker game has remained up to par, creating a vortex of fashionable choices worthy of any NBA rookie. If versatility is the name of the game, Simmons stands alone among his fellow classmates.
