Browns Rumors: Cleveland Reportedly Looking to Add Multiple QBs to 2017 Roster

Timothy RappMar 2, 2017

Mike Silver of the NFL Network (h/t Marc Sessler of NFL.com) reported that the Cleveland Browns are looking to add both a young quarterback and a veteran quarterback to the roster this offseason.

Silver added that Browns head coach Hue Jackson doesn't believe his preferred quarterback will be available with the No. 12 pick, the second selection the Browns have in the first round. That said, Silver added that the organization is hardly decided on which quarterback they'll target but that the team is going to make changes this offseason, per Sessler:

That likely doesn't bode well for last year's starter to open the year, Robert Griffin III. And Jackson didn't exactly offer a glowing review of Griffin at the NFL Scouting Combine on Thursday.

"We're going to keep working with him until we don't..." he told reporters, per Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal. "We've got to continue to get him better."

He added, per Sessler: "There are some things he did well, some things he needed to improve and we'll continue to work with him."

At the moment, the Browns don't have any better options, which a team source acknowledged to Josina Anderson of ESPN:

That may change once free agency concludes and the team is on the clock at the NFL draft. And the Browns, with the top overall pick, will have their pick of the available prospects at the position.

The question, of course, is whether any quarterbacks will be worth that top selection. B/R's Matt Miller considers North Carolina's Mitch Trubisky to be the top quarterback available, but only has him 15th on his overall big board. Notre Dame's DeShone Kizer is 16th on his big board, while Clemson's Deshaun Watson is No. 28 and Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes is No. 42.

Meanwhile, dominant defensive end Myles Garrett, widely considered the top player available in April, is No. 1 on Miller's big board. The Browns will have some interesting options come the draft:

  • Pass up on a potentially generational talent in Garrett to draft a quarterback.
  • Take Garrett and hope their favorite quarterback falls to No. 12.
  • Choose the best player available with both first-round picks and hope a quarterback they love is available in the second round.

Regardless, it's clear the Browns aren't going to go into the 2017 season with the same depth chart at the position as they had in 2016. Changes are coming at quarterback. It's now a matter of which players are acquired and which players are retained.
