The Best Dunks so Far in the 2016-17 College Basketball Season
This is a pretty fun slideshow.
It's just a bunch of videos of awesome dunks. To be precise, the best dunks at the holiday pole of the 2016-17 men's college basketball campaign.
This kind of stuff right here sells itself. So what were the biggest-ticket items? Whether it was during a big game or a big moment or solely because of its sheer spectacularness, which is now a word because I just used it, these dunks are burned in our brain pans as the most memorable of the season to date.
Oh, and on the off chance you might be interested in viewing the dunks discussed herein, there are video clips of each. 'Tis the season. I accept cash tips.
Josh Jackson Crushes UAB
1 of 6As USA Today's For The Win blog notes, Josh Jackson is a pretty athletic dude. He might be the most athletic freshman in the country. In one game against the University of Alabama Birmingham, Jackson threw down five separate dunks.
That's a lot of dunks. Check the video for the best of the night, in which Jackson netted 22 points.
The one that gets him on this list, though, is the final one, which took the soul of a brave UAB defender. Names are withheld here to protect the innocent.
Grayson Gambles and Wins Against UNLV
2 of 6When you think of a phrase like, you know, "does Grayson Allen like to throw down disgusting tomahawk dunks so hard that the ball caroms back to the free-throw line," the typical fan's answer is probably something like, "no."
But those fans are just jealous haters, just like everyone else who doesn't love Duke, am I right?
In all fairness, though, this dunk, from Dec. 10, was demonic. Allen gets a head of steam from almost half court, launches himself from halfway up the painted area and nearly pancakes himself on the landing before popping back up and sprinting back up the court. I know people who have gone entire years without expending that much energy.
And UNLV was left only with questions. Questions like, "we should really look into playing defense, shouldn't we?"
Steven Davis Just Hurting People
3 of 6You may not know the name of Steven "Not The Old Redskin Running Back Who Spelled His First Name With a PH" Davis, the senior forward with the Wright State Raiders. It's even possible you are not aware of the existence of the Wright State Raiders.
Well, now you know. Davis took an otherwise ho-hum drubbing of D-II Urbana on Dec. 13 and turned it into must-see TV, or at least web viewing, thanks to this ridiculous, head-all-the-way-above-the-rim jam.
My favorite part? The Brutus Beefcake-style knee to the sternal area Davis delivered on the ascent. I don't even care if I'm dating myself. That was just vicious.
Miles Bridges Doesn't Miss Twice
4 of 6Guard Miles Bridges is one of a slew of freshmen getting heavy minutes in East Lansing, Michigan. This is the kind of play that's helping him to stand out.
Bridges misses the free throw on an and-one bid, but no matter. He just circles around, grabs the board, tip-toes across the baseline and rotates up and into the air for an emphatic one-handed slam.
That's what you call doing a little bit of everything. Well, except making free throws.
OG Anunoby Tears Down the Tar Heels
5 of 6When Indiana's Josh Newkirk tossed the lob from beyond the NBA three-point line, the Assembly Hall faithful had just enough time to suck in its collective breath.
When OG Anunoby leaped to grab the ball and flush it with one hand, they let that breath out.
The above-the-rim theatrics that put Dick Vitale into the vapor world also put the Hoosiers up by 12. It was the exclamation on a big first-half run that ultimately helped catapult Indiana—fresh off a defeat to immortal Fort Wayne—to an upset of then-third-ranked North Carolina.
"Anunoby finished with 16 points in the Hoosiers' 76-67 upset over the Tar Heels," wrote Anthony Chiusano of NCAA.com. "But none were as exciting as those two in the first half.
You got that straight, Anthony. Anunoby's performance was dampened by a late ankle sprain, and his season is marked by inconsistency. But as demonstrated by this highlight-reel, nationally televised dunk, when he's on, the Hoosiers leap to another level.
Lonzo Ball Has a Mean Streak
6 of 6And if you don't believe me, just ask the poor Tigers of the University of the Pacific who faced Lonzo Ball and the rest of the Bruins in UCLA's season opener—and Ball's first game in gold and blue.
As illustrated in the video, Ball had ferociousness on his mind from the get-go. The 6'6" super-recruit seemed bent on showing he's more than just a passer, and he threw down enough nasty stuff in this one game to keep defenders honest for the rest of the season.
The apex of the reel comes at about the 30-second mark, when he mashes in a short lob and then rides the defender out of bounds like a cowboy into the sunset. Goodness gracious.
