UNC vs. Kentucky: Score and Reaction from 2016 CBS Sports Classic

Joseph ZuckerDec 17, 2016

The No. 6 Kentucky Wildcats (10-1) edged out the No. 7 North Carolina Tar Heels (10-2) 103-100 on Saturday afternoon in T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

CBS Sports' Matt Norlander thought the nail-biter is an early contender for game of the year:

Malik Monk set a Kentucky freshman record, scoring 47 points, per Kentucky's official Twitter account. Monk also delivered two critical three-pointers to help seal the win.

The first came with a minute and 20 seconds remaining to tie the game at 98-98, and the second gave Kentucky a 101-100 lead with 16.7 seconds left in the game. CBS Sports CBB shared a replay of Monk's game-clinching bucket:

The freshman phenom drew praise from Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green:

Even Los Angeles Clippers forward Brice Johnson, a North Carolina alumnus, had to give it up to Monk:

North Carolina lost despite the best efforts of Justin Jackson, who led the Tar Heels with 34 points on 10-of-17 shooting. Joel Berry III also stepped up to score 23 points, grab five rebounds and dish out seven assists.

Points were in abundance in the first half, which wasn't a surprise considering Kentucky (94.4 points per game) and North Carolina (88.0 points per game) were third and 11th, respectively, in scoring entering Saturday.

Monk in particular had the hot hand. The freshman guard already had a season high (27 points) before halftime, having shot 10-of-16 from the field and 4-of-8 from three-point range. According to ESPN Stats & Info, it was the most first-half points by a Wildcats freshman since John Calipari took over in 2009.

ESPN.com's Jeff Goodman doesn't think Monk gets the respect he deserves given his immense talent:

Fox also provided 11 points to supplement Monk's huge half. CBS Sports CBB shared a replay of a slick layup by Fox with 11:33 left in the first half:

Kentucky shot 53.7 percent from the field as a team. Sports Illustrated's Seth Davis thought it was telling North Carolina head coach Roy Williams opted for a zone defense late in the first half:

Trailing by as many as 12 points, the Tar Heels were down five points, 56-51, heading into the locker room at halftime. North Carolina made 17 of its 32 field-goal attempts to start the game, and it owned a 14-7 edge at the foul line to help the team keep pace with the Wildcats.

Scout's Evan Daniels thought Monk overshadowed a strong half from Jackson, who led the Tar Heels with 20 points:

Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio wasn't sure how Calipari could devise a game plan to slow the junior forward down:

The second half played out much as the first half did. North Carolina remained within striking distance of Kentucky for much of the half but couldn't find the breakthrough.

As if cooling off the Wildcats offense didn't provide the Tar Heels with enough of a challenge, foul trouble became an issue late in the second frame. Isaiah Hicks played the final 17:20 with four fouls, and Berry picked up his fourth with 8:37 left. Kennedy Meeks, meanwhile, fouled out at the 4:54 mark.

Meeks' absence and Hicks' four fouls left North Carolina exposed inside. Wildcats big man Bam Adebayo was a big benefactor before fouling out as well with 3:09 remaining. SEC Country's Kyle Tucker thought it was one of Adebayo's best performances this season:

Jackson and Berry helped the Tar Heels claw back and take the lead late, but ultimately, Monk was too much.

This was a nice win for Kentucky in the team's biggest test since its loss to UCLA on Dec. 3. The Wildcats can continue that momentum with a victory over No. 11 Louisville on Wednesday.

Kentucky can't count on Monk scoring 47 every night, but Saturday was evidence how the talented guard can single-handedly take a game over. Monk will play a big part in the Wildcats potentially getting back to the Final Four.

North Carolina plays Monmouth and Georgia Tech before opening its ACC slate against Georgia Tech on New Year's Eve. The Tar Heels should have a relatively easy conference road through January before they face off with No. 21 Notre Dame, No. 5 Duke, No. 13 Virginia and No. 11 Louisville during a five-game stretch in February.

Even in a losing effort, North Carolina showed its strength in Las Vegas on Saturday. The Tar Heels should be Duke's toughest competition in pursuit of the ACC crown.

Postgame Reaction

"I don't like it, but it was a heck of a college basketball game if you don't care who won," Williams said, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader's Jerry Tipton. "But I do care who wins."

"The game with UCLA wasn’t close. They killed us," Calipari said, alluding to the Wildcats' 97-92 defeat, per FoxSports.com's Aaron Torres. "This game was what a game should be. They make a play, you better make one. They miss a shot, you better come up with one, and you can’t panic."

Tucker reported after the game that Calipari instructed Monk to drive to the basket in the final moments to try and tie the game.

Monk disagreed with the instruction: "I was hot, so I didn't."

"He threw it, bang, it went in," Calipari said. "Great shot, kid."
