Devin Hester Waived by Ravens: Latest Comments and Reaction

Rob GoldbergDec 13, 2016

The Baltimore Ravens have waived return specialist Devin Hester, the team announced Tuesday.

Hester, 34, has worked as a receiver at times throughout his career but has seen action exclusively on special teams for Baltimore in 2016. In 12 games, he has totaled 180 punt return yards with an average of 7.2 yards per return to go with 466 kickoff return yards at 24.5 per attempt.

Lardarius Webb (two punt returns) and Chris Moore (one kickoff return) are the only other Ravens to factor in the return game this season.

Hester spent the first eight years of his career with the Chicago Bears before joining the Atlanta Falcons for two seasons. He is known as one of the best returners of all time, totaling five career kickoff returns for a touchdown and an NFL-record 14 touchdowns off punt returns.

He was named to four Pro Bowls and has been selected first-team All-Pro in three different seasons as a returner.

Although he spent time as a receiver with both the Bears and Falcons, he hasn't caught a pass since 2014. His best offensive year came in 2009 when he totaled 57 catches for 757 receiving yards. In his career, he has 255 catches, 3,311 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Mark Viviano of WJZ argued Hester isn't what he once was:

On the other hand, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network suggested a possible move to the New England Patriots, who had two special teams turnovers in Monday's game against the Ravens.
