Patriots Need Edelman Healthy Heading into Postseason
Edelman has long been among quarterback Tom Brady's favorite targets, and that continues to be the case this season, as evidenced by his 64 receptions for 617 yards and two touchdowns.
Although Edelman's per-game production is down in comparison to the previous three years, he is important to New England's offense due to his route-running ability, sure-handedness and penchant for moving the chains.
That is even truer now that tight end Rob Gronkowski is on the shelf after undergoing back surgery.
Edelman has dealt with plenty of injury issues over the course of his career as well, appearing in all 16 games in a single season just once. He missed seven contests with a foot injury last season, and foot ailments have slowed him at times in 2016 as well, although he has played through them.
New England's offense has long had a next-man-up mentality under Brady and head coach Bill Belichick, and that will come in handy if Edelman is forced to miss some time in the future.
From a wide receiver perspective, Danny Amendola has a similar skill set and can assume Edelman's spot in the slot, while Chris Hogan and up-and-coming rookie Malcolm Mitchell give Brady options further down the field.
Tight end Martellus Bennett, who was listed as questionable with ankle and shoulder injuries, also provides a big target in the middle of the field. In addition, running backs James White and Dion Lewis act as reliable safety valves.
