Chapman's New Contract Details Revealed

Wednesday, Dec. 7

Chapman and the Yankees have agreed to terms on a five year, $86 million contract, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Marly Rivera of ESPN added there is a no-trade clause for three years, and cannot be sent to a team located in California.

"I love the (Yankees) organization", said Chapman, per Rivera. "They welcomed me with open arms and that's why I decided to go back, I was hoping I had a chance to go back and it happened. Every player dreams of being a Yankee, and if they don't it's because they never got the chance."

Chapman Comments on Free Agency

Monday, Dec. 5

"The only thing I have expressed is that I would like a six-year contract," Chapman told Rivera, "I know that doesn't mean that I will get it, but that's what I would like to sign. There are rumors out there that I requested $100 million, and that's not true at all. I believe he who deserves something does not need to demand it."

Tuesday, Nov. 8

The Los Angeles Dodgers are "expected to make a dedicated pursuit" of Chapman, according to Andy McCullough of the Los Angeles Times.

Chapman Was No. 1 Reliever on the Market

Relief pitching is one area of strength in an otherwise lackluster group of free agents.

The 28-year-old Chapman has been a dominant force in the bullpen throughout his career. The Cuba native owns a 2.08 ERA and 0.99 WHIP across 383 career appearances with 636 strikeouts in 377 innings.

He also came out of the pen 13 times for the Cubs during their playoff run. While he appeared to wear down from all the work by late in the team's World Series triumph over the Cleveland Indians, his presence was vital as the Cubs came back from a 3-1 deficit to end their drought.

Now the flamethrower has cashed in with a monster contract.

In July, Chapman expressed interest in a possible return to the Yankees in free agency before he was shipped to Chicago, per Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media.

"I feel very happy and comfortable here in the city," Chapman said. "At the same time, this is a business, and if I happened to be traded away, I'm pretty sure they're going to be doing it for the good of the team. That being said, if the opportunity comes up where I can come back to the team, I would be more than happy."
