Week 9 NFL Picks: Spread Advice, Best Odds and Full Game Predictions

Steve SilvermanNov 3, 2016

New York Giants fans don't know what kind of NFL head coach Ben McAdoo is. They will have a much better idea after Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

However, if he has any kind of talent in terms of preparing his team to play, the Giants will be one fired-up squad when they come out of the tunnel at MetLife Stadium.

The Giants have won two games in a row and are coming off their bye week. They did not play particularly well against the Baltimore Ravens or the Los Angeles Rams, but they did enough things right to escape with victories.

Quarterback Eli Manning threw for 403 yards in the victory over the Ravens, while the much-maligned defense picked off four passes against the Rams in Week 7.

If the Giants can meld the best of those two efforts together against their divisional rivals, they should have an excellent chance of picking up the victory.

The Giants have the 19th-ranked offense in the NFL and the 17th-ranked defense, per CBS Sports. With receivers Odell Beckham Jr., Victor Cruz and Sterling Shepard, they have the talent to climb much higher in the offensive rankings.

Beckham is one of the game's ultimate game-breakers, and he has caught 40 passes for 630 yards and three touchdowns, but he has been distracted through much of the season and has been easily thrown off his game by opponents who try to trash-talk him.

However, he caught the game-winning touchdown pass against the Ravens, and his performance in that game indicates that he may be ready to turn the corner.

The defense has made strides, as the Giants gave up more yardage than any other team a year ago. Newcomers Damon Harrison and Olivier Vernon have helped the defensive front, and cornerback Janoris Jenkins has upgraded the secondary.

The Eagles are coming off a heartbreaking 29-23 overtime loss against the Dallas Cowboys. They had a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter after doing a solid job of keeping the Cowboys offense in check, but they could not sustain the effort.

How will rookie head coach Doug Pederson prepare his team after that near-miss? Can rookie quarterback Carson Wentz get the league's 28th-ranked offense, per CBS Sports, going again?

Those are big questions, and the rested Giants should be more prepared than the Eagles. The Giants opened as three-point home favorites in this game, according to Odds Shark, and they should win this game by at least seven points.

A new superstar has been born in the NFL, and his name is Jay Ajayi.

Well, that may be a bit of an overstatement, but the Miami Dolphins running back put together a couple of spectacular performances in back-to-back wins over the Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills before the Dolphins had their bye in Week 8.

Ajayi ran for 204 yards against the Steelers and followed up that eye-opening performance with a 214-yard effort against the Buffalo Bills.

The previously unimpressive Dolphins won both of those games, and Ajayi and his teammates will try to keep it going as the New York Jets visit Miami this week.

Ryan Fitzpatrick has been largely disastrous at quarterback for the Jets, having thrown seven touchdown passes and 11 interceptions.

He was replaced by backup Geno Smith, but when Smith suffered a torn ACL against the Ravens in Week 7, Fitzpatrick got his job back.

The Jets have registered back-to-back wins against the Ravens and winless Cleveland Browns, but they have not played well.

The Dolphins opened this week as three-point favorites, per Odds Shark, and they should be able to handle Fitzpatrick and the inconsistent Jets, with Ajayi continuing to string top performances together. Look for the Dolphins to earn the home cover.

Anger is not always a decisive factor when it comes to playing winning football in the NFL, but it can be a motivator.

The Seattle Seahawks should be an angry team when they return to CenturyLink Field Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.

The Seahawks are coming off a pair of underwhelming road performances. They slogged their way to a 6-6 tie against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 7 and lost to the New Orleans Saints by a 25-20 margin in Week 8.

That's not going to get it done for a team with hopes of getting back to the Super Bowl for the third time in four years.

The Bills are largely depleted as they go across the country with a two-game losing streak. LeSean McCoy (hamstring) could not play in Week 8 versus the New England Patriots, and he may not be at his best if he can return for this game. Head coach Rex Ryan said earlier in the week that he was hopeful that McCoy could practice Thursday, per the Bills' official Twitter account.

Sammy Watkins is on injured reserve and is not eligible to begin practicing until Nov. 11. Robert Woods has a foot injury, and he is not at his best, either.

Combine the Bills' injuries, losing streak and cross-country trip with the Seahawks returning home, and it should add up to a decisive Seattle victory.

The Seahawks opened as seven-point favorites, per Odds Shark, and they should have no problems covering that number.
