Latest on Bridges' Status
Thursday, Dec. 1
According to Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal, Bridges is out "at least a couple weeks" after injuring his ankle. He is in a walking boot in the meantime.
Bridges was averaging 16.6 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game in his highly anticipated freshman campaign. He has carved his niche as a physical defender and high-flyer near the rim.
The 6'7" forward came out of Huntington Prep in West Virginia as the nation's No. 14 overall prospect in the 2016 class, per Scout.com, and he only built anticipation further after an exhibition against Division II school Northwood with 33 points on 12-for-14 shooting, eight rebounds, four blocks and three assists.
Northwood head coach Jeff Rekeweg was floored by him, per Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press: "He’s a manchild. That kid, he’s not a kid—he’s a man. His understanding of the game and just the way he carries himself, it’s beyond any freshman that I’ve seen before."
Unfortunately, his contributions haven't helped Michigan State much as a team. The Spartans are just 4-4 to start the season after losing its top scorers from last season.
Fellow freshman Joshua Langford might be the next man up for Michigan State, although it will take everyone on the team stepping up on both ends of the court to overcome this loss.
