Ingram and Dunn are the top rookies in competition on Monday. Ingram and the Los Angeles Lakers take on the Golden State Warriors, while Dunn and his fellow Minnesota Timberwolves are in action against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
After four years at Providence, Dunn is already looking comfortable in the glorified pro scrimmages that are the summer league. He scored 27 points in his debut against the Denver Nuggets, and he followed that up with another 21 points against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday.
In the wake of his debut, CBS Sports' Zach Harper already had high praise for the No. 5 overall pick in this year's draft:
"You can't read too much into a Summer League performance because, well, it's Summer League. Teams and players will adjust to him. make him add to his game. But you can't deny the way Dunn looked in his debut either. A couple of scouts and people around the NBA compared him to John Wall -- whom Saunders coached in Washington -- for the way he attacks dribbling downhill. He doesn't have the quickness of Wall but he has a better jumper.
"
Dunn has indeed been aggressive early, attacking the rim and forcing the defense to key in on him when he has the ball. His ball-handling skills look especially impressive, as evidenced by this ankle-breaking highlight from the NBA:
Dunn credited another former Providence guard, God Shammgod, with his early highlight.
"That's Shammgod," Dunn said, per ESPN.com's Jovan Buha. "Shammgod, he trained me. That's the move of the Shammgod."
He's playing with a ragtag group right now, but Timberwolves fans surely can't wait for him to get on the court with the likes of Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins.
Ingram hasn't been quite as successful as Dunn scoring-wise, amassing 19 points in two games in Las Vegas. The 18-year-old No. 2 pick was overshadowed by top overall pick Simmons and his own teammate, D'Angelo Russell, in the Lakers' 70-69 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday, but he's hardly been a disappointment.
Ingram has shown both technical prowess and a bit of athletic flair, spotting up for mid-range jumpers and using hesitation moves to get a step on his defenders and power to the rim.
On defense, Ingram's length and instincts have already led to a couple of nice blocks and steals. Here's a look at a nice defensive play against the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday:
The Lakers couldn't stop anybody from scoring last year, so if Ingram's most immediate contributions are simply gumming up the works on that side of the ball, the Lakers should be pleased with their high-profile draft pick.
