Kevin Durant to Warriors: Twitter Reacts to Star's Decision to Join Golden State

Timothy RappJul 4, 2016

On Monday, Kevin Durant announced on the Players' Tribune that he will sign with the Golden State Warriors. According to Marc Stein of ESPN, Durant will sign a two-year, $54.3 million contract with a player option for the second year.

More importantly, he broke the internet with the news.

The Warriors might just break the NBA, given their incredible core. Consider the following, from ESPN Stats & Information:

TOP NEWS

New York Knicks v Atlanta Hawks - Game Six
Golden State Warriors v Phoenix Suns - Play-In Tournament
Denver Nuggets v Minnesota Timberwolves

And here's what he'll look like in the Warriors jersey:

That will leave Warriors fans and people who enjoy superteams feeling pretty good, including Jason McIntyre of the Big Lead:

Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder will lament the breakup:

There will, of course, be mixed reactions to the news. One of Durant's new teammates already expects the haters to come out of the woodwork:

For all the folks who are excited to watch Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Durant play together, there will be those who are displeased to see another major-market superteam, as Ken Berger of CBS Sports tweeted:

Bomani Jones of ESPN, meanwhile, was trying to process the implication of Durant's decision:

It will be fascinating to learn in the coming days what motivated Durant to make the move—he wrote "the primary mandate I had for myself in making this decision was to have it based on the potential for my growth as a player." More information will come out in the future about why he felt Golden State was the place to do so, but the obvious hook for the superstar was likely the chance to win multiple championships with the Warriors.

As Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical tweeted, the Warriors began their recruiting pitch some time ago:

Chris Mannix of The Vertical suspected it was the players in Golden State who made the difference, and Miami Heat superstar Dwyane Wade appeared to touch on that when he tweeted shortly after Durant's announcement:

It's frightening to imagine the Warriors with the 27-year-old Durant in the mix. The former MVP averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game last season, partnering with Westbrook to give the Thunder one of the league's best duos.

Now, between Curry and Durant, the Warriors will have the two players who have won the last three MVP trophies, along with the league's best shooting guard in Thompson and one of the most well-rounded forwards in the game in Green.

Internet broken. NBA broken too, perhaps. It may be America's birthday, but nobody is celebrating quite like the Bay Area on July 4.
