Seth Curry's Qualifying Offer Reportedly Will Be Rescinded by Kings

Scott PolacekJul 3, 2016

Guard Seth Curry has likely played his final game in a Sacramento Kings uniform.

Citing sources, Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reported on Sunday that “Sacramento plans to rescind the qualifying offer on Seth Curry, allowing [the] guard to become [an] unrestricted free agent.”

Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee confirmed the report.

Wojnarowski added more context to the decision:

The Kings have point guard Darren Collison, an established veteran who has scored in double figures in each of his seven seasons in the league. They also have 23-year-old guard Ben McLemore, who was the No. 7 overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft and has plenty of untapped potential.

Elsewhere, Sacramento added to its backcourt when it reportedly agreed to a two-year deal with Arron Afflalo on Saturday, per Wojnarowski.

Curry signed a two-year deal with the Kings before the 2015-16 campaign but opted out of the second season. Jones reported the Kings extended the qualifying offer Wednesday, which would have given them the opportunity to match any offer sheet.

Curry has played in only 48 games in his NBA career, but Jones pointed out that he made an impression when he received more playing time down the stretch in 2015-16. He appeared in 44 contests last season and posted 6.8 points per game, but he averaged 11.1 points per contest behind 46.3 percent shooting from three-point range after the All-Star break.

Jones noted that “Curry decided to opt out of his contract to test the market” after he tallied 14.4 points per game when he started nine of the last 11 contests of the season.

Curry picked an ideal time to test the market because the salary cap checks in at $94.1 million for the 2016-17 season, per The Vertical's Chris Mannix. His potential may be enough to merit a favorable deal even though he had played in a mere four combined games for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Memphis Grizzlies and Phoenix Suns before the 2015-16 campaign.

He is only 25 years old and shot 45 percent from three-point range last season. He is also the brother of two-time MVP Stephen Curry, and that connection alone could be enough for a team to take a chance on the younger Curry.

He isn’t an unquestioned superstar like his brother, but Curry can stretch the floor with his outside shooting and attack the basket with a quick first step, though he will likely be doing that for a different team in 2016-17.
