Andy Murray vs. John Millman: Score and Reaction from 2016 Wimbledon

Adam WellsJul 2, 2016

Andy Murray continues to roll at Wimbledon, defeating John Millman in straight sets 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 to reach the fourth round at the tournament for the eighth consecutive year.

Coming into the All England Club as the No. 2 seed, Murray's path to a second Wimbledon title was made easier earlier in the day when Novak Djokovic was upset by Sam Querrey.

ESPN's Trey Wingo provided the likely reaction from Murray after seeing Djokovic go down:

The 2013 Wimbledon champion has looked like the best player in this tournament so far, having not dropped a set in his first three matches, and Sports Illustrated provided statistical evidence from the first two rounds to back up that claim:

Murray may not have been paying close attention to Djokovic, but the rush of adrenaline upon seeing his chances of winning the tournament go through the roof could easily have helped carry him through some rough spots in the match against Millman.

In the second set, for example, Murray had 22 unforced errors that allowed Millman to stick around and force it into a tiebreaker before Murray was able to put things away to take a commanding two-set lead.

After winning the middle set, Murray moved into closer mode and picked Millman apart in the third with nine winners and winning both of his break-point opportunities. Wingo noted how dramatically things changed:

Actor Tobias Menzies noted how some of the television commentary even reflected how dominant Murray looked ending the match:

Things could not have broken better for Murray on Saturday. He's been tremendous already this season, owning a 33-6 record in matches entering today. He reached the finals at the Australian Open and French Open before running into the jigsaw that is Djokovic.

Now, with his nemesis out of the equation, a great weight has lifted off Murray's shoulders. He's still got to take care of his own business to make sure that he doesn't meet a similar fate, but Wimbledon in 2016 is set up to be his moment.

Post-Match Reaction

Murray made things look fairly easy on Saturday, though he credited his opponent and Centre Court for giving him some problems.

"I thought it was a good match," Murray said, via Piers Newbery of BBC Sport, "a lot of long rallies. John moves well and doesn't make too many unforced errors. When you go indoors it slows the conditions down a bit so it wasn't easy to hit too many winners. I had to be patient and played some good stuff in the third set."

Upon hearing about Djokovic's loss, Murray told the BBC (via Nicolas Atkin of ESPN.com) that it doesn't mean anything to him if he doesn't take advantage of it:

"

I need to reach the final for that [Djokovic] result to have any baring whatsoever on my performance at all. I have very, very tough guys left in my half of the draw, especially in the next round.

Novak's run has been amazing. He almost found a way to get back into that one again today. What he's done over the last 12, 18 months, I don't think we'll see for a long, long time. It's unfortunate for him, but it's an amazing run he's been on.

"

The biggest thing for Murray is finishing the run he's currently on. It's nice to have an opening to a title, but he's still got Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on his half of the bracket before even thinking about the final.
