Pau Gasol Reportedly Agrees to 2-Year Contract with San Antonio Spurs

Alec NathanJun 28, 2016

Pau Gasol opted out of the final year of his contract with the Chicago Bulls on June 27 and decided to move on, reportedly choosing to sign with the San Antonio Spurs.

David Aldridge of NBA.com confirmed the deal was done after Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reported the two sides were finalizing terms on a two-year, $30 million deal.

Earlier, Marc Stein of ESPN.com reported the Spurs were "lasered in" on Gasol, which Stein noted "becomes even more crucial if Tim Duncan elects to walk away." Wojnarowski reported Duncan is "leaning strongly toward retirement."

Although he's slated to turn 36 on July 6, Gasol remains one of the NBA's most dependable big men.

Last season, Gasol averaged 16.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.0 blocks in 72 games with Chicago. Dating back to 1946, the only players to sustain those averages over the course of a single season are Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bob Lanier, Kevin Garnett, Bob McAdoo, Bill Walton and Chris Webber.
