MLB Draft Tracker 2016: Live Rounds 1-2 Results and Picks
Thursday's 2016 MLB draft in Secaucus, New Jersey, ends what has been a wild ride for one of the most intriguing classes in recent history.
Often compared to great recent classes such as the Gerrit Cole-led 2011 wave, this year's offering has had more twists and turns and ups and downs than most would have dared predict.
Alas, the ride ends Thursday when the first and second rounds unravel through 77 selections in an affair that is sure to rival the draft spectacles of bigger events such as those offered by the NFL and NBA.

The A.J. Puk Show?
Most would agree there isn't a consensus No. 1 pick in the 2016 class, though Florida pitcher A.J. Puk would like a word with those people.
Puk is a monster of a pitcher at 6'7" and 230 pounds who gets something of a stock boost with the Philadelphia Phillies picking first in the draft. If there's a franchise with a strong understanding of what a deep well of pitching talent can accomplish, it's Philadelphia.
Major names such as Louisville outfielder Corey Ray and La Costa Canyon High School outfielder Mickey Moniak seem to provide some competition for the No. 1 slot, but pitching reigns supreme at the professional level.

But Philadelphia cannot ignore Puk compared to other flashier players; he hasn't had any arm issues so far in his career. Last year with the Gators, he posted a 3.21 ERA with 95 fanned batters over 70 innings.
“Growing up, everyone wants to be first pick; it’s always been a dream to be the first pick,” Puk said, according to the Orlando Sentinel's Edgar Thompson. “You’re considered the best at what you do. That would be exciting.”
There's plenty of upset potential here, of course. But seven pitchers have come off the board at No. 1 since 2002, so it seems likely Philadelphia will continue to bolster its strong developing staff.
And if not? Call it par for the course for a draft class that continues to perplex right up until the big day.
Delvin Perez Watch
No player in the 2016 class has more volatile stock than Delvin Perez.
By far the best shortstop in a class that is weak at the position, Perez wouldn't have been a shock going as high as No. 2 to the Cincinnati Reds. That is, until Jon Heyman of Today’s Knuckleball revealed Perez reportedly failed a drug test.
It's a shame, too, because the budding star from Puerto Rico is a high-upside player who doesn't turn 18 years old until next winter. He has a strong arm and uncanny range for a player of his age, not to mention workable skills at the plate.
As MLB.com's Joe Frisaro pointed out, though, many teams seem ready to take a pass after Heyman's revelation:
Now in a free fall from a stock standpoint, it's hard to know where Perez lands. Frisaro's colleague Jim Callis mocked him No. 24 to the San Diego Padres and explained why teams with a second pick are more likely to pull the trigger:
"Perez's reported positive PED test will turn off several teams but won't knock him all the way out of the first round. The most talented shortstop in a Draft thin at that position, he makes more sense for a club's second selection than its first and will come at a reduced price. San Diego was considering him at No. 8 before his reported test results.
"
Perez's draft stock is an interesting story in its own right. Perhaps more interesting, though, is how his sudden free fall might cause a ripple effect on the rest of the board and what it could mean for shortstop-needy teams in the top 20.
Maybe Perez still comes off the board early because of the top-heavy nature of the position. Or maybe he takes the expected fall, and some surprise names find their way into the first round.
No matter how it pans out, it's yet another coat of intrigue on a wild 2016 class.
