Amendola Underwent 2 Procedures in Offseason

Monday, May 16

Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reported the Patriots "hope" Amendola will be ready for training camp. However, it's uncertain at this time whether he'll even be ready for the beginning of the regular season.

Amendola, 30, had 65 receptions for 648 yards and three touchdowns in 2015. He appeared in 14 games and became a focal point in the offense when Julian Edelman missed seven games due to injury.

As has been the case throughout his career, though, Amendola was not without his own problems. The knee issue cost him two games during the regular season, and he struggled to stay fully healthy throughout the playoffs.

Howe wrote Amendola suffered "ligament damage" in Week 11 but did not delve into the injury's severity. It's also unclear when Amendola went under. Having an uncertain timetable that could last anywhere from three to four months from now means it's unlikely this was just a mere cleanup.

Amendola's ankle injury isn't much of a concern because it was merely a procedure to remove bone spurs. Either way, with Edelman also in a walking boot due to his own offseason surgery, the Patriots receiving corps heading into 2016 is looking thin.

The Pats were overly reliant on Rob Gronkowski at times last season, and they're going to need Amendola or Edelman (preferably both) on the field for third downs. Offseason signee Chris Hogan isn't going to be nearly enough to keep the offense humming at peak efficiency.
