Hassan Whiteside Injury Update: Heat Center Ruled Out for Game 4 vs. Raptors
The Miami Heat ruled center Hassan Whiteside out of Monday night's Game 4 matchup against the Toronto Raptors in the Eastern Conference Semifinals with a right MCL strain.
The team had listed the center as "day-to-day" with the knee injury, per Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel. Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has missed over two weeks with an MCL sprain of his own, however, which could be an indication Whiteside's return isn't imminent.
Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra wouldn't speculate about Whiteside's chances of returning during the series against the Raptors, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald:
Whiteside, 26, is averaging 12 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in 29.1 minutes per game in the postseason. The Raptors lead the best-of-seven series two games to one.
His loss is a major blow for a Heat team already relying on just seven players to play the bulk of the minutes this postseason. That means the trio of Amar'e Stoudemire, Udonis Haslem and Josh McRoberts will need to play increased minutes on the block, with Stoudemire likely to earn the start at center.
The Raptors, however, are dealing with issues at center as well, as Jonas Valanciunas will miss the remainder of the series with a sprained ankle, according to Mike Mazzeo of ESPN.com. What started as one of the more intriguing matchups of this series has instead reverted to a battle of backups at the center position.
However, without Whiteside, it will be difficult for the Heat to even the series before it shifts back to Toronto. If Miami falls short in Game 4, Toronto's raucous home crowd will put added pressure on the Heat to avoid elimination, especially if Whiteside's injury keeps him out of a potential closeout game.
