Kansas Coach Meets with Thornton
Monday, April 18
Thornton met with Kansas Jayhawks head coach Bill Self on Monday about the possibility of playing for Kansas next year, according to Borzello.
A 6'2" point guard out of Henderson, Nevada, the former 5-star recruit played in only 20 games for Duke last year in his freshman season before he transferred out of the program on April 10.
Rated as the No. 14 prospect in the nation in the class of 2015 and the second-best player in the state of Nevada, per 247Sports' composite rankings, Thornton received offers from at least 20 schools, including UNLV—his hometown school—Arizona and Cal.
Duke, however, won the battle to land Thornton and teamed him up with fellow 5-star recruit and No. 3 overall player Brandon Ingram. When Thornton announced his intentions to transfer in a statement released by the school, he said he wanted to play "closer to home" (h/t ESPN.com's Jeff Goodman and Jeff Borzello).
Among the schools that made an offer to Thornton, Kansas was not one of them, per 247Sports. If Thornton chooses to play for the reigning Big 12 conference champions, he'll be joining a team with a starting point guard already in place in Frank Mason III.
Despite losing leading scorers Perry Ellis and Wayne Selden Jr. to the 2016 NBA draft, Kansas will also have 5-star commit and top 2016 player Josh Jackson in the fold.
Though Kansas isn't close to home, a school on the West Coast should not be out of the picture. Although unlikely, UNLV could make a play for Thornton now that its head coaching situation is set, making him the first big target for new head coach Marvin Menzies. New Mexico and USC offered Thornton scholarships as well, so those are two teams to keep an eye on.
Thornton's presence on Duke was supposed to put the Blue Devils in contention for a national championship in 2015, but head coach Mike Krzyzewski chose a short bench and a bigger lineup over playing Thornton near the end of the year.
Thornton is a solid distributor with good handles and athleticism around the rim. He'll find a home soon enough and has potential to be one of the top point guards in the country next year.
