Umpire Rings Up Anthony Rizzo After Only 2 Strikes, Cubs 1B Winds Up with Walk
It looks like umpire Jim Wolf isn't quite in midseason form just yet.
In the top of the first inning of Sunday's game between the Chicago Cubs and the Arizona Diamondbacks, Wolf had an embarrassing moment behind the plate. Diamondbacks right-hander Shelby Miller painted the corner with a fastball to Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, so the umpire gave the pitcher the call and rang up the batter.
While it was debatable whether the pitch was a strike or not (Fox Trax shows it was borderline), the problem with calling Rizzo out on strikes was that the pitch came on a 2-1 count. In other words, it was only strike two.

Oops.
Rizzo wasn't fazed by the umpire's error, however. The two-time All-Star stayed in the box and went about his routine as usual, eventually working a walk.
Shake it off, Jim. It's just the first week of the season—there's still a long way to go and many, many calls to be made.
