Yann Hufnagel Reportedly Will Join Nevada's Coaching Staff

Alec NathanApr 8, 2016

One day after Yann Hufnagel dropped his appeal against the California Golden Bears, who were set to fire him over a sexual harassment claim, the former men's basketball assistant coach reportedly has a new job.

According to CBS Sports' Gary Parrish, Hufnagel reached an agreement with the Nevada Wolf Pack to join head coach Eric Musselman's coaching staff Friday.

Hufnagel appeared to confirm the news Friday evening with a message on Twitter:

Hufnagel was previously relieved of his duties as an assistant under California head coach Cuonzo Martin after the school opened an investigation into a "detailed series of communications and behaviors" that occurred with a female reporter from November 2014 to May 2015, according to ESPN.com's Jeff Borzello and Jeff Goodman

The San Francisco Chronicle's Connor Letourneau and Nanette Asimov reported additional details regarding the inappropriate correspondence:

"

Hufnagel’s accuser told investigators that the assistant coach sent her harassing texts every other week or so between November 2014 and May 2015 as she covered men’s basketball.

A number of texts between the two are printed in the report, including exchanges from March 2015, in which Hufnagel encourages her to come to his apartment: "It’s only real when you’re in the apartment with me ..." and refers to his bed and his couch. In another exchange, he refers to "the 3 of us" in the apartment, although it’s not clear who he’s talking about because of the redactions.

"

The reporter also alleged Hufnagel stopped providing her with the information necessary to do her job after she rejected his advances, according to Letourneau and Asimov. As a result, she was forced to stop covering the men's basketball team at Cal.

On April 4, Hufnagel's legal team released a statement through PR Newswire stating it had provided the university with additional information, including evidence that "completely contradicts her claim that she was the unwilling recipient of sexual innuendo because the texts show she was actively engaged and most often the initiator of text message conversations."

The statement also claimed evidence was presented refuting the reporter's assertion that information was withheld from her on the job, but the appeal was dropped just three days later.

Nevada's decision to hire Hufnagel now is puzzling, to say the least. Given how fresh the allegations are, the optics associated with hiring an assistant accused of sexual harassment could open the program up to a slew of criticism over the ensuing months.
