Tony Wroten Reportedly to Sign with New York Knicks

Joseph ZuckerMar 1, 2016

After being without a team for a little over two months, free-agent guard Tony Wroten will reportedly land with the New York Knicks.

Shams Charania of The Vertical first reported the two sides were working on a three-year contract, and Ian Begley of ESPN confirmed that report.

On March 1, Frank Isola of the New York Daily News reported the Knicks were considering signing Wroten.

Wroten has appeared in just eight games this year. He didn't make his regular-season debut for the Philadelphia 76ers until Dec. 5, as he was recovering from a partial tear in his right ACL. The team then released him on Dec. 24 to make space on the roster for Ish Smith.

The 22-year-old had a strong 2014-15 until his knee injury in January. He averaged 16.9 points on 40.3 percent shooting and 5.2 assists per game. The injury has limited his playing time so far this year. He played 18 minutes a night with the Sixers, posting 8.4 points and 2.5 assists per game.

Wroten won't make the Knicks a demonstrably better team, but he's a stronger all-around player than Jimmer Fredette, who was not brought back after his 10-day contract expired. At the least, the move should give New York a little more talent on the bench.
