Broncos DC Wade Phillips Wants Players to 'Quit Twittering' Him Asking for a Job

Kyle NewportFeb 2, 2016

The moment the story of safety Shiloh Keo became a viral hit, Wade Phillips and the Denver Broncos had to know they were about to get flooded for requests by prospective players looking for a shot at an NFL roster spot.

Now, Phillips just wants it all to stop.

Back in December, Keo saw Phillips sign a different safety when the Broncos needed some depth in the secondary. Wanting to let his former defensive coordinator from his days with the Houston Texans know that he was still available, the free-agent safety took to Twitter and ended up having a brief conversation with the coach.

About a week later, the Broncos signed Keo.

A story like that is almost too good to believe. A football player getting a look with the help of Twitter? That kind of stuff doesn't happen every day. Now Phillips just wants players to stop contacting him on social media to try to get a roster spot.

"In fact, if people would quit Twittering me now to try to get on the team, I would appreciate it," the Broncos defensive coordinator said at the Super Bowl 50 media event on Monday, per Tom Pelissero of USA Today Sports. "I’ve had tons of people saying, ‘Hey, I played in junior high and I know I can help you.'"

TwitteringSomewhere out there, New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is on InstantFace, smiling.

In case you were wondering, none of the other players "Twittering" Phillips have been qualified.

"No,” Phillips said, per Pelissero. “I haven’t come up with any yet that even played football.”

What some of those prospective players don't think about is that Keo and Phillips had some history together. This wasn't just a random person getting a job because he tweeted at someone. The defensive coordinator had previously coached the safety for a few years, so he knew what kind of player he would be getting.
