Philbin Reportedly Will Join Giants
Thursday, Jan. 14
Ebenezer Samuel of the New York Daily News reported: "Philbin, who was fired as head coach of the Dolphins after a 1-3 start to 2015, is expected to be named to the [New York] Giants coaching staff, according to a source. Philbin will assist Ben McAdoo, who will be named head coach."
After starting 1-3 this season and going 24-28 in parts of four campaigns as head coach of the Miami Dolphins, Philbin was fired and replaced on an interim basis by Dan Campbell.
Prior to becoming Miami's head coach, Philbin was the assistant offensive line coach for the Green Bay Packers from 2003-2005, and he held that position on his own in 2006 before a five-year run as offensive coordinator that included a Super Bowl title.
Philbin's Dolphins teams allowed 58 and 46 sacks, respectively, in 2013 and 2014, and running the ball was always an inconsistent endeavor while he was at the helm.
Philbin Linked to Colts
Wednesday, Jan. 13
According to Andrew Abramson of the Palm Beach Post, the Indianapolis Colts reportedly reached out to Philbin in relation to their offensive line coach vacancy.
While taking an offensive line coach job would have certainly been a significant step down for the Springfield, Massachusetts, native, he does have experience in that role at the NFL level.
Philbin has a strong resume as an assistant, and he could have been an asset to Colts head coach Chuck Pagano, who was retained and signed to a four-year extension despite some expecting that he would be let go, per ESPN.com's Mike Wells.
Indy's offensive line struggled last year to the tune of 37 sacks allowed and a 3.6 yards-per-carry average, which ranked 31st in the NFL.
