Sunday Recap

Bacsinszky endured a nightmare start to the new year as she was comprehensively outplayed by Pavlyuchenkova.

The Swiss star double-faulted four times in the first set as she handed the Russian a comfortable 6-2 beating, and though she made none in the second she won just three points on her serve—unsurprisingly, she was broken three times.

Bacsinszky's defeat took little more than an hour, and she was visibly distraught after the game, according to tennis journalist Matt Cronin:

Mladenovic put up more fight against compatriot Cornet in her match, but nevertheless she too was defeated in straight sets against a more clinical opponent.

Petkovic's 6-1, 6-2 win against Pereira was closer than the scoreline suggested.

However, the key difference between the pair on the day—Petkovic was far more ruthless as she took five of her seven break-point opportunities. Meanwhile, Pereira did well to earn a staggering 11 break points, but crucially she only converted one.

Varvara Lepchenko was similarly clinical against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, taking six of eight break-point opportunities in a comfortable straight sets win.

Cibulkova was made to work for her victory over Wickmayer and had to come from behind after a disastrous opening set in which she made six double faults. The Slovakian steadily improved, though, and clinched a hard-fought encounter 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Per the tournament's official Twitter feed, Cibulkova was pleased with the result but is already looking forward to the Australian Open—where she is hoping to avoid Serena Williams after being knocked out by the American last year:

Local hero Anderson hit the headlines with a memorable upset, edging out Smyczek in a tough match. Tennis writer Ben Rothenberg highlighted the result:

Monday sees a number of familiar faces enter the fray as Grigor Dimitrov takes on fifth seed Gilles Simon, while Angelique Kerber, Belinda Bencic and Victoria Azarenka are among those also competing.
