Reporter Suffers Probable Broken Leg During Iowa State vs. Iowa Court Storming

Daniel KramerDec 10, 2015

The hazards of storming the court following games came to the forefront again when a reporter covering the Iowa State Cyclones' 83-82 win Thursday over the rival Iowa Hawkeyes suffered what is believed to be a broken leg in the postgame mayhem, according to the Des Moines Register.

Randy Peterson, who has worked parts of five decades with the Register, was the victim of the pandemonium. He was taken out on a stretcher with an aircast, as shown by WHO13’s Roger Riley:

Peterson addressed the incident himself later on Twitter:

Peterson also gave a clarification on Friday, saying "I was not trampled by the crowd, I just locked legs with someone."

The Big 12 released a statement on the incident that injured Peterson, per Iowa State basketball's official twitter feed:

"I hate that Randy got hurt,” Iowa State head coach Steve Prohm said, per the Register. "That’s terrible. ... It was a great moment. That's part of college basketball.”

Iowa State released a statement on the commotion:

Storming the court in college basketball has become such a safety concern that the Big 12 went as far as to broach the possibility of retracting future home games for such behavior.

Though storming the court is in good spirit and fun for fans of college basketball, Thursday’s incident shows it may not be in the best interest of the sport.
