Jimmy V Classic 2015: Updated TV Schedule, Live Stream and Matchups

Mike NorrisDec 8, 2015

The 2015 Jimmy V Classic will take place Tuesday at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The 21st annual event will feature four teams in a doubleheader format. It is named after the late Jim Valvano, who coached the North Carolina State Wolfpack to the 1983 national championship.

He passed away from cancer in 1993 at the age of 47. Valvano's emotional speech during that year's ESPYs, less than two months before he died, inspired millions to fight the disease with courage.

Three teams from the Associated Press Top 25 poll and another just one spot from cracking the rankings will battle it out in the classic.

Here's a look at the matchups, TV and live stream schedules and a breakdown of each game.

No. 10 Virginia vs. No. 14 West Virginia

SYRACUSE, NY - MARCH 02: Malcolm Brogdon #15 of the Virginia Cavaliers drives to the basket around the defense of B.J. Johnson #2 of the Syracuse Orange during the first half at the Carrier Dome on March 2, 2015 in Syracuse, New York. Virginia defeated

Despite the schools' close proximity, the Virginia Cavaliers and West Virginia Mountaineers have not played in 30 years. It's fitting for them to meet now as Top 15 teams.

Virginia suffered an early-season loss to the George Washington Colonials, but haven't missed a beat in their other seven games, including a 64-58 road win against the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge without starting point guard London Perrantes.

Head coach Tony Bennett is hopeful the junior, who has missed the past two contests, will play, per Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.

It would be a huge break for undefeated West Virginia if it is able to face the Cavs without Perrantes. The Mountaineers have passed every test put in front of them, but they haven't exactly been hard ones. Despite the 7-0 start, Bob Huggins' team is just 51st in the RPI as of Monday with only two top-100 wins.

UVA, which has not been the dominant defensive team of a year ago but has been scoring at a higher rate, will still look to slow down a "frenetic" West Virginia offense, per ESPN college basketball analyst Fran Fraschilla:

The Mountaineers have four players averaging at least 10.0 points per game, led by junior forward Devin Williams, who also hauls in 10.7 rebounds per contest, and score 88 per contest compared to UVA's 77.

However, Malcolm Brogdon has been a scoring machine for the Cavaliers, pouring in at least 20 points four times this season. His 17.3 points per game are nearly four more than last season.

Ohio State head coach Thad Matta showered the senior guard with praise after his team lost to the Cavaliers, per Jeff Rapp of WTVN 610 AM in Columbus, Ohio:

Whichever team's pace wins out will lead the all-time series, which actually dates back to the 1915-16 season, 9-8. But more importantly, it will have its first signature win of the season.

No. 6 Maryland vs. Connecticut

When: Tuesday, Dec. 8

Where: Madison Square Garden, New York

Time: 9:30 p.m. ET

TV: ESPN

Live Stream: WatchESPN

Rankings don't mean much at this point in the season, but the Connecticut Huskies are 26 votes, and one spot, away from making this an all-ranked event.

Despite the discrepancies in the polls, don't expect the No. 6 Maryland Terrapins to have it easy.

The 5-2 Huskies haven't notched a big win, but they did give the No. 20 Gonzaga Bulldogs all they could handle in a 73-70 loss Nov. 27 in the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Maryland came into the season with high expectations and has mostly lived up to them.

Its only loss this season came on the road against the then-No. 9 North Carolina Tar Heels, who had senior point guard and team leader Marcus Paige on the floor for the first time after recovering from an injury.

The Huskies will be their next-best competition, and Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon is looking forward to the game, according to David Borges of the New Haven Register:

It certainly should be a good atmosphere, and Turgeon surely is hoping his sophomore guard Melo Trimble, who scored 23 against UNC, will rise to the occasion.

He certainly has the talent to do it, as this video from ESPN College BBall shows:

Duke transfer Rasheed Sulaimon and junior Robert Carter bring solid experience to any game, and prized freshman Diamond Stone, who has shown flashes of being a scorer, could have a breakout game any time.

The Huskies counter with a balanced scoring attack in which their top four scorers range between 11.9 and 14.1 points per game, led by junior Rodney Purvis.

Sophomore guard Daniel Hamilton has been the most consistent player for the Huskies, per Rothstein:

There's no reason to think this game won't also be a good one, and hopefully it will come down to the final few possessions.

Either way, the doubleheader is a good way to honor Valvano, and anyone affected by cancer, while celebrating the game he loved.
