Fantasy Football Rankings: Week 14 Big Board
Four weeks remain in the NFL regular season, which puts us into crunch time for fantasy football. For many, Week 14 is the start of the playoffs or possibly the last chance to make that playoff push. No matter the format, any game played this late in the season comes with higher stakes, which is why my decision-making comes down to trust.
I’ve compiled these rankings as I always do, with emphasis on talent, situation, role, recent performance, injuries and matchup. The issue of trust becomes even more important, as it can be the factor that pushes someone such as New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick into my top 12 based on how he's played both over the course of the season and in recent weeks with the team in a playoff race.
Don’t get me wrong; I know you may have to reach deep to get the last spot in your lineup, which may explain why Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett is worth a look Week 14, even as a rookie. That’s a calculated move using a player with a beatable matchup (Baltimore Ravens) on a team coming on strong (Seattle Seahawks) with a reliable quarterback who’s been looking Lockett’s way (Russell Wilson).
It’s a perfect example of leaning toward a situation I trust to help settle an important move. For that same lineup spot, I had Ravens wide receiver Kamar Aiken ranked close to Lockett, and while Aiken has put up better numbers for the season, I gave Lockett the nod because of my trust in Wilson and the Seahawks over Matt Schaub and/or Jimmy Clausen and the Ravens.
You may use my rankings as a guide to help set your lineups for Week 14, but trusting your own process to make those tough calls is what got you this far. Don’t change when the decisions matter the most.
As always, these rankings will be updated throughout the week and right after inactives come down for the early-afternoon games Sunday.

Quarterbacks: All the Options
2 of 7
Better than usual
- Tyrod Taylor, Buf: Over the last two weeks, Taylor has accounted for seven touchdowns (six passing, one rushing) and has turned his fantasy season around at the perfect time. He’ll have a great chance to keep it up in a juicy matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. They’ve given up the most fantasy points to quarterbacks in the last four weeks, in part due to 16 total touchdowns allowed during that span.
- Ryan Fitzpatrick, NYJ: I considered putting Fitzpatrick in the sleeper category, but when you’re talking about a top-five fantasy quarterback over the last month, no one should be sleeping on him. Coming off 390 yards and two touchdowns in Week 13 against the New York Giants, Fitzpatrick can stay hot when he faces a Tennessee Titans defense that’s given up the seventh-most fantasy points to quarterbacks over the last month.
Worse than usual
- Derek Carr, Oak: For as good as Carr has been most of this season, this week is one of the few times to be concerned about his fantasy prospects, as he has a tough matchup with the Denver Broncos. Back in Week 5, the Broncos limited Carr to 249 yards, one touchdown and one interception. They’ve held QBs to the seventh-fewest fantasy points in the last four weeks.
Avoid
- Philip Rivers, SD: All the injuries around Rivers are finally catching up with him, and it’s killing his fantasy value. Last week, he went for just 202 yards with no touchdowns and one interception against the Broncos. Wide receivers Stevie Johnson (groin) and Dontrelle Inman (ankle) both went down, which means he could be extremely short on talent this week against the Kansas City Chiefs. They’ve been a top-three defense against fantasy quarterbacks in the last four weeks.
- Matt Ryan, Atl: Ryan has had plenty of criticism lobbed his way with the Atlanta Falcons in the midst of a major meltdown, and it’s well-deserved, as he’s a big reason things have fallen apart so quickly. In his last four games, Ryan has just one game with 300 yards and has thrown six touchdowns to six interceptions. Don’t let name value fool you. He’s a bad option against a great Carolina Panthers defense.
Sleepers
- Jameis Winston, TB: We have a decent quarterback with some level of success facing the mess that is the New Orleans Saints defense, so that pretty much makes Winston a lock to be one of the top streaming quarterbacks of the week. The Saints have yielded the second-most fantasy points to QBs in the last four weeks.

Running Backs: Find Some Trust
3 of 7
Better than usual
- David Johnson, Ari: If you picked up and played Johnson last week, you got a lot more than expected in an impressive performance against the St. Louis Rams. With a short week at home against the Minnesota Vikings, Johnson could be a top-10 option because the Vikings have already ruled out four key defenders, per KFAN.com.
Worse than usual
- Devonta Freeman, Atl: The Panthers have allowed a total of 130 rushing yards to running backs in the last four weeks. They’ve also allowed 21 receptions for 135 yards during that same span. I’m not completely avoiding Freeman, as he can do enough as a receiver to salvage some fantasy value, but expectations must be lowered in this brutal matchup.
- Todd Gurley, StL: Even though Gurley might be a big reason you’ve made it this far in your fantasy season, he may end up being a big reason you don’t go any further. He hasn’t run for more than 66 yards in any of the last four games and has just 18 carries in the last two weeks. The Rams are a mess, and it’s killing his fantasy value. Oh, and he faces a Detroit Lions defense that’s given up the fewest fantasy points to running backs in the last month.
Avoid
- DeMarco Murray, Phi: The Eagles are coming off a big upset of the New England Patriots, in part because of some big changes in their backfield. Murray was limited to just 22 percent of the snaps, which was even with Kenjon Barner and way behind Darren Sproles’ 56 percent. Both head coach Chip Kelly and offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur had chances to endorse Murray and did not. Plus, Ryan Mathews (concussion) could be back this week. You can’t trust Murray against the Buffalo Bills.
Sleepers
- Bilal Powell, NYJ: For the second time in three games, Powell played more snaps than Chris Ivory in Week 13, and he had a big game with eight receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown. Ivory may struggle to find room against the Titans defense, which may afford Powell more opportunities in the passing game. Powell doesn’t look like he’s going away anytime soon, so he’s worth a look against Tennessee this weekend.

Wide Receivers: A Loud Roar
4 of 7
Better than usual
- Allen Hurns, Jac: We already know Allen Robinson is one of the best fantasy wide receivers, but with Hurns coming back from a concussion, there’s more than enough room for two big fantasy performances this weekend. That’s because the Indianapolis Colts have allowed the second-most fantasy points to wide receivers in the last four weeks, and Hurns got them for 11 receptions, 116 yards and a touchdown in Week 4.
- Michael Floyd/John Brown, Ari: In Week 13, Floyd finished with seven receptions for 104 yards and Brown had six receptions for 113 yards in a big win over the St. Louis Rams. The Cardinals start off Week 14 on Thursday night against a beat-up Vikings defense that’s already ruled out four players, including safety Harrison Smith, per KFAN.com. The best offense in football should have plenty of fantasy production to go around.
Worse than usual
- Amari Cooper/Michael Crabtree, Oak: The schedule isn’t kind if you’ve been riding Cooper and/or Crabtree for most of the season. Unfortunately for their owners, they face the Broncos in Denver in Week 14. Denver is the top defense against fantasy wide receivers in the last four weeks. Back in Week 5, it held Cooper to four receptions for 47 yards and Crabtree to four receptions for 54 yards.
Avoid
- Brandon LaFell, NE: With all the injuries in New England, LaFell looked like a prime candidate for a boost in fantasy value, but he’s had just 14 receptions for 195 yards and no touchdowns in the last four games. In Week 14, he matches up against the Houston Texans, which is a defense that’s held wide receivers to the ninth-fewest fantasy points in the last month.
Sleepers
- Tyler Lockett, Sea: In two of the last three games, Lockett has posted strong fantasy numbers, including seven receptions for 90 yards in Week 13. The Seahawks draw the Ravens in Week 14, and while Baltimore has been better by the numbers against wide receivers over the last month, it hasn’t exactly been tested by the Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns or St. Louis Rams. Lockett and the Seahawks will give them a serious test Sunday.

Tight Ends: Never a Worry
5 of 7
Better than usual
- Travis Kelce, KC: Kelce disappointed fantasy owners with just two receptions for 42 yards in Week 13 with a prime matchup against the Oakland Raiders. He’ll have a good chance to rebound against the San Diego Chargers in Week 14. They’ve given up the sixth-most fantasy points to tight ends in the last four weeks.
Worse than usual
- None of note.
Avoid
- Richard Rodgers, GB: It can be tempting to chase points, but remember that while Rodgers was having a great game last week, he got a huge boost from a 61-yard Hail Mary with no time left on the clock. He hasn’t topped five receptions or 45 yards in any other game all season. Expect him to be back to normal when he faces a Dallas Cowboys defense that’s held tight ends to 14 receptions, 165 yards and one touchdown in the last month.
Sleepers
- Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TB: Week 13 was Seferian-Jenkins’ first game back from a shoulder injury he suffered in Week 2, so it wasn’t a surprise to see him play just 29 percent of the snaps. Look for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to ramp up his role against the Saints on Sunday. Only the Jacksonville Jaguars have allowed more fantasy points to tight ends in the last four games.

Defense/Special Teams: Enjoy the Matchups
6 of 7
Best options based on matchups
- Seattle Seahawks (at Bal): Banking on Matt Schaub or Jimmy Clausen to throw a pick-six shouldn’t be the primary reason to use a fantasy defense, but it doesn’t hurt, especially for an opportunistic unit like the Seahawks'. It is tied for the seventh-most fantasy points in the last four weeks, while the Ravens are tied with the Raiders for allowing the seventh-most fantasy points over that span.
- Kansas City Chiefs (vs. SD): No team has allowed more fantasy points to opposing defenses than the Chargers over the last four weeks thanks to nine sacks, two interceptions, three fumble recoveries and two touchdowns. The Chiefs will take advantage of the depleted Chargers offense.
- Denver Broncos (vs. Oak): The Broncos have been one of the best fantasy defenses all season, so matchups haven’t mattered much, although it helps to face the Raiders this week. Oakland is tied for the seventh-most fantasy points allowed to defenses in the last month.
- Detroit Lions (at StL): The Rams turn back to quarterback Case Keenum this week, although it really doesn’t matter, as they have the worst quarterback situation in the league. Look for the Lions to pounce on a team giving up the third-most fantasy points to opposing defenses in the last four games.

Kickers: A Chance for More
7 of 7
Best options widely available on the waiver wire
- Mike Nugent, Cin: Accurate kickers on good teams are usually smart plays for fantasy, which is why Nugent looks like one of the best options for Week 14. The Cincinnati Bengals have an AFC North showdown with the Pittsburgh Steelers this week, and there’s potential for a lot of points. Nugent hasn’t missed anything in the last four games, including seven field goals and 12 extra points.
