NFL Power Rankings Week 13: Division Standings, Latest 2015-16 Super Bowl Odds

Chris RolingNov 30, 2015

Going into Week 13, maybe the NFL playoff race isn't as boring as many first thought.

Through the halfway point of the season, it seemed there were a record number of losing teams and most division races looked predictable.

Now, though, backups are playing well in place of stars, unexpected teams are getting healthy in wide-open division races and once-dominant teams haven't just walked the cliff but have jumped right off.

Odds Analysis

Indianapolis Colts (28-1)

The Indianapolis Colts would be the hinted team playing incredible football behind a veteran.

With Andrew Luck out of the picture, it's 40-year-old Matt Hasselbeck sitting on a 4-0 record as a starter this year, the most recent run a two-win streak for the team to land at 6-5.

The latest win was a 25-12 breeze against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where Hasselbeck threw for 315 yards and two scores to outduel rookie quarterback Jameis Winston.

"He's not playing like he's 40," receiver T.Y. Hilton said, according to ESPN.com. "He's out there having fun, making sure guys are in the right spot and letting us make plays. He's fired up and wants to make sure guys are in the right spot so he can make plays."

With Hasselbeck playing this well, it's hard to see how the Colts don't make the postseason. The AFC South has improved since starting off the year looking like the worst division of all time, but the Houston Texans are the only threat while also sitting at 6-5, the difference being a 27-20 Colts victory against the Texans on the road in Week 5—orchestrated by Hasselbeck.

It's impossible to ignore the Colts at this payout, especially with the allure of a healthy Luck returning at some point this season.

Atlanta Falcons (100-1)

Time's running out for Matt Ryan and the Falcons.

The Atlanta Falcons are one of the league's biggest current implosions.

Matt Ryan and Co. started the season hot, winning five in a row and picking up wins against potential contenders such as Philadelphia and the New York Giants. Since then, though, the team has lost five of six and currently rides a six-game slide.

It's rather inexplicable, too. Ryan had tossed eight interceptions at home going into this past Sunday when his team hosted the Minnesota Vikings. He added two more in the 20-10 loss, prompting some interesting comments from those around him after the game, such as one captured by ProFootballTalk:

Again, the reason isn't easy to figure out. The defense hasn't played lights-out by any means, but over the course of the four-game skid, the unit has let up more than 20 points just twice. Most years, Ryan and the offense have no issues compensating.

To make matters worse, sitting at 6-5 is the worst possible thing for the Falcons. The Carolina Panthers lead the NFC South at 11-0, and the Buccaneers sit right behind the Falcons at 5-6—and already tout a 1-0 mark in the season series after upending the Falcons in Week 8.

The line here has dropped in dramatic fashion for good reason. At this point, bettors minds have to move from a good-value outlook to a possible must-avoid scenario.

Washington (66-1)

The Colts thriving around a veteran quarterback's skill set and winning isn't so shocking.

Washington might be a little more surprising.

Coach Jay Gruden's team looks like one of the more interesting bets around now that quarterback Kirk Cousins and his budding offense have won two of their last three.

So what's going on in Washington? The team had first place in the NFC East on the line and was downright tired of losing. Safety Dashon Goldson called a players-only meeting before the team's last game, as Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post explained:

"

Then Goldson talked to his teammates about what he thinks they’re capable of, and the effort they need to give on Sundays, and the things they can still accomplish. He said they shouldn’t need a blimp or a banner to convince them they’re good enough to succeed, and they shouldn’t need coaches to keep them in line. Several more players then spoke, hitting on similar themes.

"

The result? A 20-14 dismissal of the New York Giants in which Goldson's defense picked off Eli Manning three times while Cousins threw for 302 yards and a score.

Long story short, Washington continues to get healthy—DeSean Jackson looked 100 percent against the Giants with two grabs for 66 yards and a score—and now sits in first place in the NFC East.

Given the momentum and explosiveness of the improving offense, Washington might be able to hang on to its divisional lead and make some noise in the postseason.
