Duke vs. Georgetown: Score, Highlights and Reaction from 2K Sports Classic 2015

Timothy RappNov 22, 2015

Add Georgetown to the list of Grayson Allen's victims this season.

The ascending Duke superstar posted his fourth game of 26 or more points this season, scoring 32 points while adding five rebounds, four assists and two steals in Duke's 86-84 win in the 2K Classic championship game.

Allen also became the first Duke player with back-to-back 30 point games since J.J. Redick scored 30 or more in five straight games in 2006, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Derryck Thornton added 14 points, and Matt Jones scored 11 for Duke (4-1), while Isaac Copeland (21 points, six rebounds), D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (14 points) and L.J. Peak (13 points) led the way for Georgetown (1-3).

Despite a poor record to start the season, Andy Katz of ESPN thinks there is a silver lining:

After a back-and-forth, exciting first half, Georgetown headed to the locker room leading 47-42, thanks to shooting 57.1 percent from the field and Copeland's 15 points. Duke was efficient on the offensive end as well, however, hitting 50 percent of its shots as Allen chipped in 16 first-half points.

The Blue Devils came out on fire in the second half, however, hitting their first six shots and taking a 61-54 lead. Allen was automatic to start the second frame, scoring nine points and adding two assists in the first five minutes of the half.

Dick Vitale was impressed with the young Duke Star, per ESPN College BBall on Twitter:

His performance was certainly a far cry from his disappointing game against Kentucky earlier in the week, when he managed to score just six points, as Jeff Eisenberg of Yahoo Sports noted:

Allen also showed his next-level ability on the perimeter, per Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress:

Duke switched to a 1-3-1 zone early in the second half, which seemed to frustrate the Hoyas and grind their offense to a halt. But the Hoyas fought back, whittling the deficit to 68-67 with just over six minutes remaining in the half.

That was as close as Georgetown was going to get, however, as Allen scored seven points in the final three minutes to lead the Blue Devils to the win. Jay Williams of ESPN was impressed by the sophomore down the stretch:

Georgetown kept things close, but it looked like Duke would hold on easily for the win after hitting seven of 10 free throws in the final minute. However, after Thornton missed a freebie with six seconds remaining and Duke up by just two, Copeland had a chance to win the game for Georgetown with a three-point attempt. His shot came up short, though, and Duke escaped with a big win.

The Blue Devils once again appear to be the real deal and likely will go as far as Allen can take them, although his supporting cast is hardly shabby. Georgetown, meanwhile, looks like the most dangerous 1-3 team in the country and a squad that will make noise in the Big East this season.

Up next for Duke will be matchups against Yale and Utah State before a big matchup against Indiana on Dec. 2. The Hoyas will face Bryant and Maryland-Eastern Shore before taking on Syracuse on Dec. 5.
