New York Jets Week 9 Stock Report
At least a few New York Jets players wish they could have last week back.
The Oakland Raiders embarrassed the Jets, beating them 34-20 in a game that wasn't anywhere near as close as the final score indicates.
That being said, at least a couple of players could walk out of Week 8 holding their heads high, knowing that they did everything in their power to give the Jets a chance to win. They never had that chance, though, as they fell behind 21-3 in the second quarter and were trailing 28-6 in the third quarter.
The Jets need a win badly in Week 9 in order to avoid the first three-game losing streak of the Todd Bowles era. Here are a few players who need to pick up the pace and a couple of others who need to carry their solid play from Week 8 into the next game.
Stock Down: Antonio Cromartie
1 of 5
With Darrelle Revis locking down one side of the field, any quarterback with half a brain is going to look to the opposite side of the field. That means the No. 2 cornerback has to be ready for passes to be thrown his way at all times. Sometimes, Antonio Cromartie has been up to that challenge. Other times, he's been completely victimized.
Week 8 was one of Cromartie's worst performances of the season. According to Pro Football Focus, the veteran cornerback allowed seven receptions on nine targets (77.8 percent) for 140 yards and two touchdowns.
This marks the fourth time this season in which Cromartie has yielded at least 70 percent completions in a game.
The Jets defense is ultra-talented, but their pass rush has been falling short of expectations lately. That puts more pressure on the secondary to cover for longer periods of time. It's crazy to think about, given the level of talent in the secondary, but if the Jets can't get pressure with the blitz, they may have to keep those defenders back in coverage for extra help.
Stock Up: Brandon Marshall
2 of 5
After this week, Brandon Marshall is exempt from the stock-up category. He has made it into this group nearly every week this season so far, and at this point, he has long since established himself as one of the best players on the team.
That being said, we reserve the right to add Marshall back into the mix in a situation such as Sunday, where the Jets have so few players worthy of "stock-up" status.
Marshall hauled in nine passes for 108 yards Sunday, although he had to be targeted a season-high 18 times to reach those numbers. This is the fifth time this season he's posted 100 receiving yards or more and the sixth time he has caught at least six passes.
Marshall is unarguably the Jets' offensive MVP and arguably the team MVP through seven games. Whether it's Ryan Fitzpatrick or Geno Smith throwing the ball, Marshall is going to be an important piece of the offense.
Stock Down: Breno Giacomini
3 of 5
Jets right tackle Breno Giacomini had a tough task Sunday blocking Raiders outside linebacker Khalil Mack, one of the best young pass-rushers in the NFL.
That being said, Giacomini got his hat handed to him on more than one occasion, as Mack registered five hurries and a sack. This season so far, Giacomini has yielded 19 hurries and two hits in pass protection and gave up six hurries and a hit against the Raiders.
Of course, it might have helped if the Jets had a decent tight end to put next to Giacomini and help in pass protection, but because they don't, the Jets need him to be solid on his own.
Giacomini had a rough start to his Jets career in 2014, but he had been at least decent in 2015. Week 8 was the first indication this season that the Jets might still have real concerns at tackle.
Stock Up: Wesley Johnson
4 of 5
Over the past couple of weeks, the Jets have incurred some serious injuries, but one of the most severe is that to center Nick Mangold. The Jets' veteran center suffered a neck injury in Week 7 against the New England Patriots and did not practice leading up to Sunday's game against the Raiders.
Enter Wesley Johnson, a second-year backup center starting his first regular-season game. Johnson gave up a sack, but he played well in pass protection overall and did as good a job as anyone could expect in relief duty of Mangold.
The running game never got as much traction as it might have liked, picking up just 74 yards on the day, but the Jets fell behind 21-3 in the second quarter and 28-6 in the third and thus abandoned the run altogether with just 21 carries.
The Jets should still be hopeful that Mangold recovers sooner than later, but in the meantime, at least they know what they have in Johnson.
Stock Down: Demario Davis
5 of 5
As previously mentioned, a lot of Jets defenders would probably like to have last week back, but linebacker Demario Davis might take the past two weeks back.
Against the Raiders, he missed four tackles and gave up two receptions, one of which went for a touchdown. That follows up a performance where he had two missed tackles and allowed five receptions on six passes into his coverage for 42 yards.
The Jets linebackers have both been exposed in coverage at times this year. The coaching staff might want to consider ways to limit their exposure in those situations, perhaps by sending them on a pass rush more often.
That being said, the linebackers are supposed to be the anchors of the defense. The Jets need Davis and David Harris to elevate their level of play if the defense is going to get back on track.
