Recap
An opening ace from Federer set the tone for much of the first set as he blitzed his Kazakh opponent in his city of birth.
A six-time winner in Basel, the world No. 3 broke twice to race into a 5-0 lead, with Kukushkin barely getting a look, even on his own serve.
The world No. 64 finally got a game on the board for 5-1 as he held to love, but Federer served out the opener in brutal fashion, per Tennis TV:
Kukushkin put up more of a fight at the start of the second set as the pair exchanged service holds for 2-2.
However, while Federer rushed through his own service games with ridiculous ease, Kukushkin was forced into multiple deuces to simply stay in touch.
The underdog eventually crumbled as Federer went 4-2 up after consolidating his first break of the second set.
His now-trademark sneak attack earned him the double break for 5-2, and yet more perfect serving saw him seal a two-set thrashing in under 55 minutes.

Goffin's victory came in over two hours, with the world No. 17 forced to come back from a set down against Seppi.
He was broken three times in the opener to lose it 6-3 but then rallied well to force a decider as he put pressure on Seppi's serve.
Goffin piled the pressure on further in the third as he forced nine break points, taking two of them to confirm his place in the second round with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory.
