NFL Rumors: Latest Buzz Surrounding Vernon Davis, Colin Kaepernick and More

Danny WebsterOct 27, 2015

The NFL doesn't have serious rumblings in the trade department every year.

Three notable players, in particularVernon Davis, Roddy White and Matt Fortehave been in trade discussions for weeks, but nothing has come from it as of yet.

That could change, however, with the Nov. 3 trade deadline only a week away.

Let's take a look.

Davis' future with 49ers "unclear"

The former Pro Bowl tight end's decline has continued into this year, as Davis has been nonexistent in the San Francisco 49ers' stagnant offense.

Davis has caught only 12 passes for 170 yards this year but is coming off a four-catch, 61-yard performance last Thursday against the Seattle Seahawks. With the 49ers looking more and more likely to enter rebuilding mode, Davis could be the top name the team looks to move at the right price.

On Thursday, CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reported that "numerous teams" have called the Niners in regard to Davis and feel there's a chance that they could acquire him.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport followed that up Sunday by saying Davis, who will be a free agent after the season ends, has an uncertain future in the Bay Area.

"Another player due a huge salary, his role really has diminished in this offense with Jim Tomsula taking over as the head coach," Rapoport said about Davis (via NFL.com's Kevin Patra). "It's unclear what his future is with this team."

Given the right situation, Davis could be a weapon in a contender's offense. He caught 52 passes for 850 yards and 13 touchdowns two years ago.

The 49ers offense has taken a nosedive since losing to the Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game two years ago. San Francisco has gone from scoring the 11th-most points (25.4 points per game) in 2013 to dead last in the NFL through seven games this year (14.7 points per game).

The 49ers won't be making the playoffs this year, so it wouldn't hurt San Francisco to see what the market is for the 31-year-old Davis.

Colin Kaepernick feels alone

Speaking of the 49ers and their abysmal offense, signal-caller Colin Kaepernick's struggles are perhaps the biggest reason why San Francisco is sitting at 2-5.

Kaepernick completed only 13 of 24 passes for 124 yards in the 20-3 loss to Seattle last week. He's thrown six touchdowns and five interceptions and fumbled five times this year. On Sunday, Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reported that Kaepernick is starting to feel like he's "on an island" in the locker room:

"

His confidence is completely shot. It's not that (the players) don't like him. But he's just alone, on an island in that locker room. There's not a lot of people he connects with. Confidence-wise he's just buried right now.

They can move on from him at the end of the year provided he is not injured. That's not the team's mindset. They look at him and say, 'This is the same guy that took us to the Super Bowl.

"

Kaepernick is only a year removed from signing a $126 million contract. So far, he hasn't lived up to it. San Francisco has to find a way to get him going, or Kaepernick could be on the trade block along with his teammate.

Chargers expected to sign Joe Mays

With the San Diego Chargers preparing to be without rookie linebacker Denzel Perryman for the foreseeable future, San Diego is looking to sign former Denver Broncos linebacker Joe Mays, per ESPN's Adam Caplan.

The Philadelphia Eagles selected Mays in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL draft, and he recorded 18 tackles in 11 games in his rookie year. He went on to play in Denver for the next three years, recording a career-high 75 tackles in 2011. He played in only eight games last season for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Perryman's injury was a biceps strainnot a tear, as the Chargers had originally feared.

Gehlken also noted Chargers linebacker Manti Te'o suffered an ankle injury in Sunday's loss to the Oakland Raiders, so Mays can serve as needed insurance at the position for the Chargers.
