Jones Comments on Potential Deal for Hardy
Monday, Oct. 26
In an interview on 105.3 The Fan's GBag Nation, Stephen Jones, the Cowboys' chief operating officer and executive vice president, said the team would "absolutely" be willing to re-sign Hardy to a long-term deal and called it "very much a possibility," according to Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News.
Hardy a Valuable Pass-Rusher Despite Controversy
Hardy, 27, has been a force in his two games this season, registering eight tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble. There's no questioning his dominance on the football field, though the off-field issues in his past and his fiery and, at times, confrontational demeanor do make him a risk.
That fiery nature reared its ugly head Sunday, when Hardy knocked a clipboard out of a coach's hand on the sideline and was seen berating the special teams unit and arguing with Dez Bryant during the team's loss to the New York Giants.
When asked if his personality was an issue for the team, however, Jones answered, "Not at all. Zero. Got a lot respect from his teammates."
Head coach Jason Garrett also addressed the incident, per Machota:
The Cowboys do have a history of working with players with off-field concerns, notably keeping Bryant on a short leash during the early years of his career, so it isn't surprising that the team seems willing to look past this current issue and work with Hardy going forward.
His behavior will obviously be monitored very closely, however, as even the Cowboys are unlikely to make a gigantic financial commitment to Hardy if they feel he can't reel in some of his outbursts in the future or will continue to create distractions.
