Cam Newton Says NFL Media Should Have Pay Deducted for Incorrect Predictions

Joe PantornoOct 21, 2015

If Cam Newton had his way, a lot of journalists would be strapped for cash.

The Carolina Panthers enter Week 7 as one of five teams with an undefeated record, and their quarterback wants the NFL's media to be punished even further than the social embarrassment of predicting games wrong, per Black and Blue Review (via CBSSports.com's John Breech):

"

No offense, but I find all media comical at times, I think in your guys' profession, you can easily take back what you say. There's no danger when somebody says, "Oh, I'm going to pick this team to win." If it was a pay cut or if it was an incentive, picking teams each and every week you get a raise, I guarantee people would watch what they say.

He delved even deeper into his perfect scenario: "They should have incentives. If you make a bold statement and you're correct, you should get an X-amount increase. But if you make a bold statement and it goes the other way, you get deducted. And it goes straight to the Cam Newton Foundation."

It's doubtful many reporters chose the Panthers to lead the NFC South with a 5-0 start this season. Those who thought so probably kept those kinds of comments to themselves. A journalist's readership at times can be ruthless, and lofty predictions can attract the ire of some of the more passionate fans.

David Newton of ESPN.com wasn't so far off, though. Before the season, he had the Panthers at 4-1 entering Week 7, with their one loss coming to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 6. The Panthers won that game 27-23. How much would he have been fined?

Most members of the media also are not making the kind of money Cam Newton is. It's unlikely there are any who'll earn $103.8 million over the next five years as the Panthers quarterback will, per Spotrac.com. So pay cuts, even if they are going to something as noble as the Cam Newton Foundation, would make journalists feel plenty of pain in their wallets.
