NFL Scores Week 6: Results and Top Fantasy Football Stars for Sunday Games

Nate LoopOct 18, 2015

For the second week in a row, the NFL saw multiple overtime games to start off Sunday's action. The Cleveland Browns beat Baltimore 33-30 in overtime in Week 5 and took the undefeated Denver Broncos to the brink in Week 6.

The result was different this time around, with Brandon McManus nailing a field goal in overtime to preserve the Broncos' spotless record in a 26-23 win.

Detroit picked up its first win of the season in overtime, a 37-34 thriller over Chicago that saw Matthew Stafford put in his best performance of the season with 405 passing yards and four touchdowns.

Top Skill Players from Early Sunday Slate

Chris Ivory, RB, New York Jets

The New York Jets have established themselves as a real wild-card threat—barring catastrophe, New England is going to win the AFC East—and a good portion of the credit goes to the sustained excellence of running back Chris Ivory.

The 27-year-old put up his best overall performance of the season against the Redskins, racking up 196 all-purpose yards and one touchdown. He amassed his total with a few big plays—including a 54-yard scamper in the second quarter—and plenty of grunt work and tough yards. The NFL has a look at his long run:

He might be shedding his reputation as a power back with runs like that, per ESPN's Rich Cimini:

The Jets rushing attack was good enough that Zac Stacy picked up 46 yards and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick added another 31 yards and a rushing touchdown. Ivory is clearly the lead back even though Stacy had just seven fewer carries. Ivory's big 50-yard receiving day is unlikely to be repeated—he had just three catches for 12 yards coming into the game—but he's very much an RB1 for the foreseeable future.

DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Houston Texans

Hopkins has been a more than capable replacement for Andre Johnson as the top wide receiver in Houston.

Sunday marked Hopkins' fourth-straight game with at least eight receptions and 100 yards, and he added two touchdowns to boot. His streak of topping the century mark tied Johnson for a team record, per John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. Several of his grabs were of the spectacular variety. There was a one-hander pinned to his helmet while tumbling out of bounds, another spinning one-hander on the sideline and this juggled catch for his first score, via the NFL:

It seems whenever quarterbacks Ryan Mallett or Brian Hoyer are even remotely unsure about where to go with the football, they end up chucking it at Hopkins with the hope the wideout's athleticism and sticky hands will do the rest. NFL.com's Gil Brandt knows it:

With Julio Jones slowing in recent weeks, Hopkins might well be the top fantasy wide receiver when all is said and done this year.

Gary Barnidge, TE, Cleveland Browns

The Barnidge carnage continues. Josh McCown's new favorite target alongside wide receiver Travis Benjamin picked up just three catches for 39 yards in his side's 26-23 overtime loss to the Broncos, but two of those receptions were for touchdowns, pushing him ahead of the likes of Jacksonville's Julius Thomas (78 yards, one touchdown) on the fantasy scoreboard.

Barnidge has now scored a touchdown in four straight games. The 30-year-old's 413 receiving yards this year are already a career high for a single season and approaching his career total coming into this year (603). Here's a look at his 11-yard touchdown reception, via the NFL:

Sports journalist Mike Tunison wondered if Barnidge was quickly becoming the Browns' latest folk hero:

Head coach Mike Pettine had very nice things to say about his emerging star heading into this game, via WKYC's Matthew Florjancic

"

He gets open. He catches the ball. He can run after the catch. Certainly, I don't think any of us knew his ability to make the circus catch, but he understands defensive football very well, understands how teams are trying to play him, leverage, recognizing coverages. He's a combination -- he's a good athlete, good ball skills, but he's got, I think, very high football acumen. I think (tight ends coach) Brian Angelichio does an outstanding job not just with Gary but with the rest of that room preparing them each week.

"

The fact that Barnidge produced against a very tough Broncos defense bodes well for his continued fantasy football success. His nine targets also show McCown has plenty of trust in him, even if he only caught a third of them this week. Unless you're also carrying a blue-chipper like Greg Olsen or Travis Kelce, Barnidge is absolutely worth a start in fantasy leagues of all sizes.
