Fantasy Football Week 6: Buying or Selling Top Injured Players

Steven CookOct 15, 2015

It's easy to track down the latest injury news regarding fantasy football players, but knowing whether a player returning from an injury will actually produce can prove frustratingly difficult.

Putting the proper context into your fantasy star's return to the field is a must, especially when you're taking out a serviceable option in his place. As tends to be the case in the NFL's war of attrition, the injury reports are chock-full of players owned by millions of fantasy football owners.

Let's take a close look into four injured players who could possibly return—and one who's playing injured—in a Week 6 version of buy or sell.

Buy: Jaguars RB Denard Robinson

To say the Jacksonville Jaguars offense has found an identity in Denard Robinson's absence would be an understatement. Quarterback Blake Bortles is settling in with two stout receiving threats and has led the Jags to a better start offensively than their 1-4 record indicates.

Robinson has officially returned to practice as a full participant, per Jennifer Millman of RotoExperts, meaning his three-week injury break is likely to end Sunday. Toby Gerhart got first-team reps in replacement of the injured T.J. Yeldon, per Vito Stellino of Jacksonville.com, but they're likely saving Robinson for the game.

With the Houston Texans likely to key on Bortles' much-improved passing game, expect Robinson to gash a defense that ranks in the bottom third in the league against the run.

Sell: Bills QB Tyrod Taylor

Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor showcased his composure with a late 80-yard touchdown drive that put away the Tennessee Titans in Week 5, but injured his knee in the process. He said that "it's the plan" for him to play Sunday, per Mike Rodak of ESPN.com:

Despite Taylor's late comeback last week, his unit put up less than 130 yards of offense before that game-winning drive. With virtually all of the Bills' playmaking threats on offense nursing injuries, they're likely to struggle even more against the undefeated Cincinnati Bengals with Taylor unable to showcase his normal mobility.

There will be quarterbacks available on the waiver wire who will put up more points than Taylor this weekend.

Buy: Packers WR Davante Adams

Say it ain't so! Davante Adams finally appears to be ready for a return to the field after missing three games with an ankle injury, per ESPN.com's Rob Demovsky

The Packers haven't missed Adams enough to lose a game in his absence, but Aaron Rodgers himself spoke to the importance the young playmaker brings to the offense with Jordy Nelson out for the year.

“Davante Adams, I think, is a Pro Bowl-caliber player,” Rodgers said, per Demovsky. “And without him and without Jordy [Nelson] we need to find some other ways to attack the outside stuff and still be able to be effective inside.”

Up next is the San Diego Chargers, who have proved susceptible anywhere beyond the opponent's No. 1 wideout. Stud cornerback Jason Verrett will be shadowing Randall Cobb for much of Sunday's meeting, leaving Adams open for big plays.

Sell: Bears WR Alshon Jeffery

Fantasy owners who bet high on Alshon Jeffery and have benched him for weeks throughout a frustrating injury absence won't like this. But even if the Chicago Bears' star wideout returns, don't expect much out of him.

Jeffery did return to practice this week, per Zach Zaidman of the Chicago Bears Radio Network. But he's returned to practice before without being activated the following Sunday, and Jeffery himself has expressed patience in the return, per Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune, calling it "a long season."

With free agency looming for Jeffery after the season and a bye week upcoming after a game against the Detroit Lions, it wouldn't be surprising if Jeffery continued his absence from Sunday's actives list for one more game.
