Terrell Owens Comments on Cowboys, Potential Return to NFL

Tim DanielsOct 1, 2015

Former NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens admitted Wednesday that he never heard from the Dallas Cowboys after expressing his availability following an injury to Dez Bryant. He's still hoping an opportunity to return will arise, though.

The 41-year-old wideout told TMZ Sports he's "staying ready, so I don't have to get ready" should the Cowboys come calling in the near future.

"I haven't heard anything as of yet ... but that's not to say that anything can't happen," Owens said.

The six-time Pro Bowler also stated he would consider teams beyond the Cowboys, but the "right situation" would need to present itself.

Owens returned to the spotlight last month when he talked about making a comeback during an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show (via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk). The former superstar had his agent reach out to the Cowboys and hoped the team could look beyond past problems:

"

We all know what happened when I was there, and there were some things said where it kind of maybe fractured the relationship between myself and [Jason] Witten and [Tony] Romo. Time has passed, and hopefully, they know that I've moved on beyond that. Maybe, hopefully, they have. But for me, it's all about giving myself an opportunity. That's all I ever really wanted.

"

The Cowboys had already acquired wide receiver Brice Butler from the Oakland Raiders to provide some depth by the time Owens made himself publicly available. Apparently, it's been an unsuccessful plea as the team eagerly awaits Bryant's return from a foot injury.

Owens actually performed reasonably well the last time he played an NFL regular-season game in 2010. He caught 72 passes for 983 yards and nine touchdowns for the Cincinnati Bengals.

He suffered a torn ACL during the offseason, however, and he didn't get another chance until the Seattle Seahawks signed him in 2012. He lasted less than a month on the roster.

While Owens was once one of the most physically imposing offensive weapons in the league, it's hard to imagine he could perform anywhere near that level at age 41, especially after a serious ACL injury.

That's why it's highly unlikely the Cowboys, or any other team, will come calling despite his request for one more chance to shine.
