Eagles vs. Redskins Won't Be Postponed Due to Hurricane Joaquin

Tyler ConwaySep 30, 2015

The Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles reportedly have been notified they will play in Week 4 as scheduled, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. A "source expresses doubt" the game would be moved to Detroit, which was among the possible options discussed, per Mark Maske of the Washington Post.

Based on weather "we expect to play Sunday’s Philadelphia at Washington game as scheduled on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET," the league announced, according to Albert Breer of NFL Network. However, Maske noted the league would continue to monitor forecasts the event last-minute changes needed to be made.

As the East Coast prepares for the potential arrival of Hurricane Joaquin over the weekend, the NFL put in a contingency plan for Sunday's game.

La Canfora reported the NFL's plan was to give both teams a Week 4 bye and make up the game in Week 8 if inclement weather made travel infeasible. Philadelphia is scheduled to travel to the Washington area Saturday.

As noted by Alex Sosnowski of AccuWeather.com, Hurricane Joaquin was upgraded to a Category 4 hurricane Thursday afternoon. The storm is expected to make its way to the Eastern United States at some point this weekend, though it's unclear where the weather pattern will take it.

Weather.com reported Landover, Maryland, where Washington's home stadium is located, is expected to see rain through the weekend, though the severity varies.

Both Washington and Philadelphia have a Week 8 bye, so the NFL could have rescheduled the game without much incident. It would have been a minor inconvenience to coaches and players who have prepared all week for a game rather than enjoying a leisurely bye week, but it beats the alternative of playing in dangerous conditions.

The two teams enter Sunday's clash with matching 1-2 records. As of now, weather won't get in the way of the matchup.
